On July 17th, the design team of Cora, Alex, and Ryan launched their first playing card project, The Drinking Deck. Through the lens of “Thomas Tippins,” a fictional character created specifically for this project, they are using the medium of playing cards “to present classic cocktail recipes and the [history] surrounding drinking and alcohol in this country,” says Ryan Andrews of Golden State Spirits, one-third of the team. “It’s also a much more interactive way of presenting classic cocktails recipes, instead of a one dimensional print book.”

Cora Tang, the illustrator of the team, is drawing everything by hand, and then digitizing the results for printing by USPCC. Each card will be unique: the number cards feature cocktail recipes; the Jacks feature bartender tools; the Queens focus on historical events in American drinking; the Kings present the tale of Thomas Tippins; finally, the Aces will discuss the cultural and physical effects of alcohol. Each suit will be represented by a different cocktail glass. Although it is still being designed, Ryan has assured us that the back will be a two-way design.

Currently just shy of 50% funded with 30 days left to go, the goal for the project is $9,000. To check out the deck, and the complete list of recipes, click here.
