The Moonphases is a unique deck of playing cards currently seeking funds on Kickstarter. Designed by Perpetual Arts & Design Company, headed by Carlos Pun, the deck is inspired by horology and mechanical watches and is fully custom featuring a cool bold back design that looks great for cardistry. Here are 5 things you didn’t know about Moonphases Playing Cards:

1. The Moon Phase Back

The team at Perpetual Arts & Design Co. wanted to create a bold deck with an almost iconic look, in watches the moon phase complication is perhaps the most beautiful and meaningful there is and the most elemental in its graphical representation of time. Carlos explained, “Two mirrored moon phases in a solid silver metallic ink back, give us the look and feel that we deeply strive for, like the most expensive deck of cards, (casino decks) but with a sophistication and beauty that goes beyond the surface. They display the moon and the stars representing the perpetual passing of time in space, their mysterious look makes just holding it in your hands feels magical.”

2. Cool Unique Feature

The real secret of this deck, however, comes when the cards are riffled through, it produces a magical illusion, the moon phase slowly (or rapidly) spins in an almost perpetual animation, as if produced by the intricate machine it holds within, it integrates every single card as every single watch part to work as a unit to produce this amazing animation. It also works to match a very cool card reveal included. “This is the perfect allegory to what an intricate beautiful engineer can produce flawlessly on a mechanical watch.”

3. Fully Custom and Intricate Courts

The redesigned hand-illustrated court cards of the deck are certainly eye-catching. Inspired by watchmaking pieces and aesthetics. Gears, jewels and crowns seamlessly blend into their design while maintaining their classic elements so they’re still recognizable. Each of the court cards are a work of art by themselves. They look like intricate automatons. There are also fine prints and original acrylic paintings as an add-on on the Kickstarter project.

4. Redesigned Pips

All four pips are recreated like watch parts. The spades are the mechanical rotor in automatic watches, the hearts gears and the hairspring, the diamonds the jewel bearings and the clubs a chronograph dial that even marks the value on each card!

5. Free Cardistry and Magic Instructionals

Also included is an amazing card revelation anyone can use to amaze. “You can use it with the moonphase animation to produce a truly magical experience. We’ve included in every pledge bonus tutorials, one for the card reveal and another for a great trick using the unique backs. Most of the pledges also include some nice cardistry and card magic instructionals of your choice completely free!”

Moonphases will be printed by the USPCC in crushed Bee stock with Air-Cushion Finish and the backs will feature shimmering silver metallic ink. If you’ve like what you read here and would like to support Moonphase Playing Cards, head to the Kickstarter page here! Pledge start at $11.
