On Kickstarter DJ DeLand Playing Cards by Penguin Magic

Designed by Phill Smith and Kevin Reylek for Penguin Magic, DJ DeLand Playing Cards remix one of the most ingenious marking systems in magic history with a playful vinyl-record twist. Inspired by DeLand’s Donut Shop Deck and developed from a concept by Seth Race, this deck brings classic deception into a modern retro groove.

Each card hides a multi-layered marking system that reveals not only its suit and value, but also the neighboring cards in Mnemonica stack, allowing seamless memorized-deck miracles. The system is explained in a detailed digital tutorial by Kevin Reylek, along with an instruction card right out of the box.

The artwork is fully custom, from the hypnotic record-back design packed with hidden information to the vintage-styled faces and breakdancing joker jesters. Even the tuck box and seal echo the retro vinyl aesthetic, with textured details and record-store flair.

Two editions are available: Standard Edition comes in Mnemonica Stack Order with the complete marking system and custom tuck. While the Gilded Edition features holographic silver foil edges that shimmer like spinning records, plus circular tuck cut-outs showcasing the shine.

Printed on Penguin Magic’s UltraLux Finish with AquaFlow Coating, the deck offers smooth handling, crisp snap, and exceptional durability for performers and collectors alike. Pledge starts at $14 on Kickstarter.

Sunken Anchors Playing Cards

Sunken Anchors Playing Cards is a collaboration between False Anchors creator Ryan Schlutz and Penguin Magic, an elegant yet enigmatic deck designed for both mystery and mastery.

At first glance, the deck’s deep-sea blue palette and clean design evoke a sense of calm- yet beneath the surface lies hidden treasure. Designed by Jill Breitbart, Sunken Anchors strikes a balance between customization and usability.

The two-way back features a minimalist double-anchor motif with thin borders, blending nautical charm with visual clarity. The Jokers mirror each other with anchor illustrations, and the Ace of Spades is rendered with intricate rope detailing, tying the theme together. Standard court and number cards have received a tasteful color refresh, staying true to tradition while reinforcing the deck’s unique aesthetic.

For the magician, gaff cards are subtly tucked into each deck, far from the standard fare, and every purchase includes access to an exclusive tutorial video from Ryan Schlutz. Whether you're performing sleight-of-hand or simply appreciating fine design, this deck invites discovery.

Even the tuck box is a tactile experience, made from subtly textured uncoated paper and printed inside and out. A stamp-style seal keeps the deck secured inside.

These cards are printed on Penguin’s UltraLux stock with AquaFlow coating, offering superior handling and durability. Pledge starts at $14 on Kickstarter.
