News: International Cardistry Open Season 2 Champion Named

After months of competition, the International Cardistry Open (ICO) Final has come and gone. A dramatic 3-minute cardistry video determined who would emerge victorious as the champion of the second season.

The 5 finalists — Alvin Herp, Amsyar Fikri, Matthew Beaudouin, Phuoc Tran and Sam Wheeler — seemed evenly matched coming into the Final after displaying strong season performances, but it was Matthew Beaudoin who was the most consistent throughout the season with Alvin Herp coming in as runner-up. Matthew wowed the judges with his cardistry skills and his amazing continuous shot video! There was no denying that Matt had put a lot of thought, planning, hard work and thereby claiming his place as the Season 2 ICO Champion.

Joey Heininger, ICO co-organizer, theflush said,
Congratulations to the finalists and to everyone else that entered, a very big thank you! Ivan and I are extremely overwhelmed by the sheer volume of people that joined us this year, without all of you there is no doubt the ICO could not continue, every single one, from the earliest Novice to the seasoned Veteran and even the spectators, you are what make the ICO what we are,

Cardistry: First Look at the International Cardistry Open (ICO) Deck

In conjunction with Season 3 of the International Cardistry Open (ICO) this year, Expert Playing Card Co. and Kardify are releasing a commemorative ICO deck to celebrate the tournament’s third year of existence. This bold and eye-catching deck has been meticulously designed by artist Brendan Hong, who is well known for the gorgeous Hive and Dynasty Playing Cards.

The ICO deck has been crafted with cardists in mind, embracing the movement and beauty of motion of each card in the deck. On the design of the ICO deck, Brendan explained,
The back design for the ICO deck started with a very simple idea to have a diagonal line as a very prominent part of the design. A lot of playing card back designs tend to be very much designed around a quadrilateral symmetry and that works well, but sometimes it's interesting to take a challenge to try something different. It started with that line and the goal to design a deck that cardist would want to use. The latter part is a tough idea to work with as there are quite a few decks out that work really well with cardistry from really simple designs to very complex one. I think the most important thing out of all those designs was how the card design moved in motion whether it's a single card or a few cards or the whole deck. Regardless of what the design was, it moved and looked beautiful in motion.

The dynamic back design visually accentuates card flourishes and displays, making fans, spins and cascades look incredible. Brendan added,
The last and important part of it all was colours. Colour is so simple to write off, but it plays such an important part in the overall design; having the right colours could make or break a design. This back design was very much a collaborative effort and there was a lot of back and forth with the team at Kardify and myself about what colours we should use. Once we hit upon the 4 colours we had for the back, we all knew it was the right one: something that looked good and something very unique.

Together with the bold and eye-catching colourway, the ICO deck commands attention while striking a balance between style and functionality. Neatly packaged in a durable synthetic tuck, the deck is crafted by Expert Playing Card Co.

Cardistry: Assembly 2021 by Eliot Slevin

Assembly is a small-scale playing card company run by Eliot Slevin (ICO Season 1 winner), focusing on non-traditional designs, produced in small batches. The inaugural launch of the brand features 3 deck designs, Graphic 303 - Dark, Graphic 303 - Light, and Logos in grey.

Graphic 303 Dark edition deck features a one-way back design combining shape and color. Each card back is unique and order Graphic 303 produces 504 different potential unique sequences of cards. The face cards are pretty much standard classic American faces. The contrasting dark blue background of the card backs makes the shapes pop!

The Graphic 303 Light edition is a lighter colorway of 303 dark. Instead of dark blue, the card backs feature a grey colorway with the same shapes featured on the 303 Dark edition. The deck is packaged in a teal accented tuck box.

The final Logos deck is probably our favorite of the 3. Every assembly deck gets a unique version of the logo. This deck is a deep dive into the system, looking at some of our favorite permutations. The deck feature a minimalistic design with a one-way unique card back showcasing a permutation on each of the cards.

All decks printed by Cartamundi, B9 finish on Slimline stock. Only 400 of each design was produced. The decks are available for $15 on https://assembly.cards/.
