Bicycle Turris contra Turrim Playing Cards Bring Medieval Bologna to Life

Produced by PlayingCardDecks, Bicycle Turris contra Turrim is a new limited-edition playing card deck inspired by the towering architecture and fierce family rivalries of 12th-century Bologna, Italy.

Unlike most custom decks created digitally, every court card and the tuck box artwork originated as hand-painted acrylic canvases by artist Artur Rajch. The artwork adopts a striking proto-cubist style, with geometric portraits inspired by early modernist paintings, reflecting the conflict and ambition that defined medieval Bologna.

The asymmetrical back design features contrasting cyan and red halves symbolizing the city's rival factions, while Latin words including Ultio (Revenge), Ordo (Order), Ambitio (Ambition), and Lucrum (Profit) reinforce the deck's historical theme.

Printed by the United States Playing Card Company on Premium Classic Crushed stock with the signature Air-Cushion Finish, the deck includes 56 fully custom cards, including two unique Joker designs. The deck is limited to a first edition of 2,500 copies.

Pledge starts at $13 on Kickstarter.

The card backs feature an ornate bandana-inspired pattern, while the traditional courts are updated with subtle bandana-style attire and detailing. Custom pips add a fresh visual twist without sacrificing readability, keeping the deck practical for gameplay while enhancing its decorative appeal.

The Bicycle Ghosts of Tombstone Playing Cards

The Bicycle Ghosts of Tombstone Playing Cards by PlayingCardDecks brings the old west legends, outlaws, and lawmen of Tombstone, Arizona back to life on every card. Inspired by the ghostly tales and historic figures who shaped this “Town Too Tough to Die,” artist Artur Rajch has created a deck steeped in western atmosphere and rich storytelling.

From the dusty streets where the infamous 1881 Gunfight at the OK Corral erupted, to the smoky saloons and the rowdy Bird Cage Theater, the imagery captures the grit, danger, and drama of Tombstone’s past.

Figures like Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday appear alongside gamblers, gunslingers, and performers whose stories live on in both history books and whispered ghost stories.

The weathered tombstones of Boothill Graveyard become silent witnesses, their engraved names reminding us of bravery, betrayal, and bloodshed. Every face card is a piece of art, meticulously designed to immerse you in the time and place of the American frontier.  The deck’s custom tuck seal features bold western iconography and the historic date “1881” in tribute to the most famous gunfight in western history.

Printed by the USPCC and pledge starts at $12 on Kickstarter.

The cards also have a connected  cigar band-styled effect when spread, adding to their visual appeal. The jokers depict sparrows with a backdrop of either clouds or solid red.

Additionally, the deck includes a double backer and a blank face card, perfect for magic tricks. With a thicker, casino-grade stock, the deck feels snappy and crisp, ideal for handling. Printed by USPCC on Classic Stock with Traditional Cut.

Chronicles Series: Egypt Playing Cards by PCD

From PlayingCardDecks, Chronicles Series: Egypt Playing Cards explores the grandeur of ancient Egypt, bringing its rich history to life through a series of exquisitely designed decks. Designed by the renowned artist and historian Artur Rajch, this collection takes you on a journey through three pivotal eras: the Old Kingdom, the Middle Kingdom, and the New Kingdom.

Three decks on offer during the Kickstarter campaign, each representing a different era of ancient Egyptian history. The Old Kingdom deck captures the era of the pyramid builders, showcasing the beginnings of Egyptian civilization. The Middle Kingdom deck reflects the period of cultural and agricultural advancements that marked Egypt’s growth and stability. The New Kingdom deck celebrates Egypt’s age of empire and conquest, highlighting its peak in power and influence.

Inside, the card backs in each deck are equally detailed and rooted in historical inspiration. The Old Kingdom cards draw inspiration from the intricate necklace of Princess Sithathoryunet, symbolizing the period’s opulent craftsmanship. The Middle Kingdom cards depict Sphinxes standing on scales, symbolizing the era’s focus on justice and spirituality, particularly the process of weighing the soul. The New Kingdom cards are inspired by the Pectoral of Tutankhamun, featuring a majestic falcon representing Horus, embodying the divine protection and power characteristic of this period.

The court cards in the Chronicles Series feature notable figures from ancient Egypt, including kings, queens, priests, architects, Nubian mercenaries, and landowners. These cards are intricately detailed, with each deck including a special card that provides identifying information and historical context for the figures depicted.

The tuck box design is thoughtfully created to represent the essence of its era. The Old Kingdom deck features a hieroglyph on the front, symbolizing the ancient writing systems crucial to the power of the pharaohs. The Middle Kingdom deck’s front cover displays a wheat head, symbolizing the agricultural revolution that was vital to Egypt’s prosperity. The New Kingdom deck is adorned with symbols of Egypt’s transition into the Iron Age, featuring an axe and sword on the front, and a map of the Kush region on the back, underscoring its significance as a center of conquest.

Pledge starts at $14 on Kickstarter.
