Review: Madison Dealers (Erdnase Green) Playing Cards

This review will feature the Madison Dealers Erdnase Green Playing Cards. Review taken from the archive of TuckCase.

Released by Ellusionist.com, the Madison Dealers are of Daniel Madison, popular card magician and illusionist.  Madison had these cards "printed to [his] specifications"  from the design right down to the paper stock and finish. These cards come in a common unlimited Erdnase green and a rare Scarlet red. In order to obtain the Scarlet deck one must purchase a brick of the Erdnase. The cards are not your typical playing cards as Daniel implemented a built in marking system for card hustlers to use for their advantage. It is not known whether or not these cards were printed by USPCC but it is highly speculated.

The tuck case design is all white with a card finish.The entire case design is rather minimalist with only the name of the cards plus "Luxury Playing Cards" and Madison's logo on the front in Erdnase green, which is the same color used on S. W. Erdnase 'Expert At The Card Table' first edition. The back design is on the box's back and "Madison Dealers" is written across the top flap. Extremely simple, extremely luxurious. An interesting design element that was added to the case is the "JL" on one inside side flap, which was done in respect to the artist of the cards -  Jeff Lianza. Jeff is also a good friend of Daniel's and makes an appearance in the card deck as the King of Spades.

The back design is a two way borderless design in Erdnase green that features Madison's logo repeated. This is reminiscent of the early house casino decks that were used around the time Erdnase's book was first published - 1902. Most people nowadays know borderless to be the Bee brand of cards. The back design also includes the special marking system that Daniel developed. Most marked decks comes at a hefty price tag but these are offered at normal cost of a custom deck (currently on Ellusionist.com for $6.99).

For the spectator, if they look at the back design enough, it will play tricks on them as the small repeating pattern tends to make the brain do odd things. The marking system in that sense is undetectable. However, as the card magician once you train your eyes where to look for the markings, the back design becomes much less confusing. If you struggle with sight and your vision is poor, this marking system may cause you trouble as the markings are only visible within arms reach. Holding this deck further away causes more problems so trying to use these cards to cheat in a poker game won't be of use.  According to the instruction video, the point of these cards were to be held close up - hence, being called "dealers."

Editors note: I played with this deck for a couple of hours after learning the marking system and was able to guess cards just by glancing at the back. My suggestion is to get used to finding/looking at the markings without giving yourself up first and then memorize the suits. Finally, once you know the suits, tackle the numbers and court cards. I learned if you break it up into three steps, instead of trying to get it all at once, you will get the system much quicker.  

The deck comes with a standard 52 plus 2 jokers, a double back and an ad card. The jokers feature a dead crow, which is extremely morbid for this deck of cards. Considering the deck says "Luxury Playing Cards" on the front of the box, anything to do with death and blood is far from luxury. The crows are not new to Madison's design as his last deck of cards the Rounders also featured them. Despite the morbid Joker design, a 3 of clubs reveal is built into the legs of the dead crow on one of the Joker cards. This is very undetectable unless you are really looking for it or have been told it is there. The Jokers also are not part of the marking system. If you plan on using the marking system it is best you take the Jokers out.

The Ace of Spades follows the "Luxury" theme by creating an ace out of Madison's logo. The court cards all have a custom Anglo-American style design. Each court features someone from Daniel's life, whether it be another magician or good friend. Daniel is actually featured on the King of Diamonds, which also has a 9 of Clubs reveal.  The Rounders also used people from Daniel's life as well. The use of real life people in a deck of cards is quite interesting and makes these cards all that more personal.

The number cards are standard with no differences other than a slightly darker red ink used on the hearts and diamond.

The Madison Dealers are extremely durable. Used for over 24 hours for practicing and breaking them in, the cards still look, feel and perform like brand new. The cards are a bit stiff as shuffling will require some hand strength initially. Over time that does not become a problem. Fanning is extremely easy as no clumping of the cards occurs. They are almost too smooth so be mindful of that as they do have a tendency to slip away from your fingers.

• This deck was speculated to be the Madison Red Rounders.


• The factory of this deck is not given out. It is speculated that USPCC printed this. However, USPCC is not mentioned anywhere on the deck or in any of the marketing material.


• Daniel Madison also brought the Madison Players to market with Theory 11.

Final Assessment: The Madison Dealers are an extremely useful and versatile deck of playing cards. Although they are not a designer deck where you will see a lot of depth and color, they are certainly a hustler's deck with many tools for performing tricks. This deck has two reveals and a marking system that can all be used in a lot of different tricks.  This deck is recommended for the magician who doesn't want to spend time marking his/her own deck. It is also for the magician who doesn't want to pay double the price for a marked deck. The Scarlet red version of this deck is something for all collectors to track down as there were only a limited amount made available.

7 Questions with Bill Davis of Pink Boar Playing Cards

Based on the Lunar calendar 2019 is the Year of the Pig. What better way to honor it than to help fund this stylish deck designed in honor of pigs, spread awareness on pig rescue, and promote The Pig Preserve in Jamestown, Tennessee where designer Bill Davis and his family volunteer. Wild Reserve: Pink Boar playing cards are seeking $6,555 in funding goal on Kickstarter. Currently, the deck is already 88% funded with 14 days to go.

The semi-custom deck features standard face cards, custom courts with Bill's profile on the J of Hearts, his wife on the Queen of Clubs and Daniel Madison on the King of Diamonds, a custom Ace of Spades, two custom Jokers, double back and an ad card that provides a description of the rescue and their contact details. The card back features a minimalistic yet intricate and inconspicuous one-way back design.

Earlier this week, we had a chat with Bill about the inspiration behind Pink Boars, design evolution of the deck and Daniel Madison.

For those of us who don’t know, tell us a little about yourself?
I am a psychotherapist by trade but have been doing magic since I was a child. I’ve always been involved in creative endeavors throughout my schooling including chorus, theater, and art. At heart, I am a creator and have made several of my own magic effects, mostly card effects, though I do enjoy performing magic for friends and family at any opportunity presented. While I do dream of one day performing more regularly and have done one professional gig which I enjoyed and at which I received amazing reactions, my current focus is on creating effects, as mentioned, as well as playing cards. I’m obsessed with both. I haven’t marketed any of my own effects yet but plan to do so. I have well over a thousand decks of playing cards, I have several ideas/projects in the works for more of my own decks, and I am always thinking of new ideas for effects and decks to come. I am also heavily involved in animal rescue and fitness.

Can you describe the WILD RESERVE: Pink Boar Playing Cards? And why you are passionate about it?
Wild Reserve: Pink Boar Playing cards are designed in honor of a very special cause. My wife and I volunteer our time at The Pig Preserve in Jamestown, TN where pigs are rescued from a variety of situations such as abuse cases or piglets having fallen off the back of slaughter transport trucks. I have spent time with these animals and have seen what is involved in the care of them. Thus this deck was created in honor of that cause, in honor of the pigs and the joy they bring, and in honor of the workers who dedicate their lives to caring for and rehabilitating them. I am passionate about sentient life and I am passionate about this deck because it represents that.

Talk to us a bit about going from the first draft to the final version. How did you get to this finished product?
The idea for this deck was actually first conceived on our way home from volunteering at The Pig Preserve one weekend. I have another deck that has been on the back burner for some time, and the idea popped into my head that I would like to do a deck in honor of their cause. The rest is a funny story. As my wife drove home I sat in the passenger seat and sketched a cartoon-like first draft of the deck which looked very childish. My friend Steve suggested I create something more stylish and vibrant that would speak to most anyone and everyone. I asked for input from family and friends as I played with ideas, as I find it important to get feedback from those who care about the things I care about.

What was your most brilliant breakthrough when designing the deck?
While this deck has a rather minimalistic and simplistic design, and I wanted to keep it simple as my first deck (versus marking it), I still wanted to incorporate a one-way back design for magicians. I graphically played with the boar’s hair trying to accomplish this but did not have much success. Then, as silly as it sounds, a light bulb went off in my head to flip the image horizontally on one opposing side of the card and… the rest is history.

We noticed some notable names like Brian Brushwood and Daniel Madison helping you promote the project. How did you end up connecting with them and getting them to promote the project?
Although they are two completely different personalities, Brian Brushwood and Daniel Madison, among others including Chris Ramsay and Shin Lim, have been a big influence on me for the longest time. However, I ended up connecting socially with Brian and Daniel specifically. Brian and I connected initially via orders I placed through scamstuff.com, a shop for his Scam School/Scam Nation YouTube channels, from having emailed him questions about various items and small talk has evolved from there. We began corresponding via Twitter around the time my idea for the Pink Boar deck was born when I reached out to him asking if he might be able to help. Brian was responsive, encouraging and gladly obliged.



Madison and I connected somewhat differently. Long story short, Madison, out of nowhere, responded favorably and with praise for this Pink Boar design when I first posted it on Instagram. Having been a long time YouTube follower of him as well, I was highly complimented. I soon after joined his Patreon site where he formed the Madison Alliance, a group of exclusively like-minded artists. Upon flying to England to partake in a related meetup with this group including Madison, to say the least, he and I became close friends. Among other things, we spoke about my project and he offered to help with it in any way that he could. He ended up promoting it in a number of ways including via his “The MADISON Deck Review: EPISODE Eleven!” on his YouTube channel (video embedded above). My deck was also reviewed by Magic Orthodoxy (embedded below).



As you’ll notice from my campaign, I also had help from Lorenzo Gaggiotti of Stockholm17 and Daniel Schneider of Black Roses Playing Cards. Daniel Schneider is also the designer behind the Orbit decks which most people don’t know and for which he doesn’t get enough credit, the humble guy he is, and Madison, Gaggiotti and Schneider are also all behind some of my favorite decks as you’ll see below. (Thus, my seeking their help wasn’t at all coincidental, LOL.)

With so many playing card projects competing for funding, why should potential backers choose your deck? 
Backers should choose my deck because of its unique and stylish design as well as for what it represents. This deck speaks of two main things: creativity and compassion. While there have been several other decks on the market for different types of causes, some which I own and fully support, this deck is unique because it is in honor of an animal so often unknown, unappreciated or misunderstood by the vast majority. The deck combines a cool look on standard USPCC cards that most everyone loves, while at the same time spreading the word about the cause. Also, choosing my deck will allow for the creation of many different types of future decks, as funding this first project will help make that happen. I plan to continue with creative endeavors as a playing card designer and to bring many other designs to the playing card community given the chance.

Finally, what are your favorite playing cards? 
My favorite playing cards include white Madison Rounders, green borderless Madison Dealers, red Black Roses, Polyantha, Le Chat Rouge No. 17 and House of the Rising Spade. The Rounders in white are minimalistic and just… amazing, the red Black Roses are simply beautiful, and the green Dealers and Polyantha are different from the others in their own respect to how they fill the card back with a repetitive design. Le Chat Rouge No. 17 and the House of the Rising Spade Cartomancer/Gatekeeper variant are both absolutely stunning both in color and presentation and are definitely decks I love to show off.

Daniel Madison and Ellusionist Tease Madison Scarlet Rounders

Update 6/17: The Madison Scarlet Rounders were released as a free gift with the purchase of Madison's latest instructional video Mechanic. 

Released by Daniel Madison on his Instagram account late this afternoon, the Madison Scarlet Rounders are confirmed and are coming soon to Ellusionist. The Scarlet Rounders also made an appearance in a series of videos by Ellusionist featuring Daniel that have been playing up a new release that end with the single word "SOON". In typical Ellusionist style, the full release has been a mystery as it has been unclear whether it will be a tutorial, magic production or an actual deck. At this point it could be all three. However, there is a countdown on Ellusionist.com counting down to Wednesday, July 17 at 4PM EST when all will be made available or the time when the mystery will be made clear if these videos only pertain to the deck or if they are for much more.

This comes only a few weeks after Daniel Madison and Ellusionist released the marked deck Madison Dealers.

News: Daniel Madison's First Independent Deck, Madisonist Playing Cards

News: The Final Edition Madison Rounders Playing Cards by Ellusionist in Pink!

A few years ago, Ellusionist jokingly released a fake image of the Pink Madison Rounders on April fools Day. But after the joke had passed, Daniel Madison felt a little bit sad that it was only a joke and he couldn’t get the Pink Rounders out of his mind. According to Daniel on Ellusionist newsletter,

Since the inception of the Madison Rounders, I always hoped that there would be many color additions, but it wasn’t until an April-Fools-Day joke that I began to dream of one day having a deck of Pink Madison Rounders.

The Pink Madison Rounders were released privately on Ellusionists' Secret Menu 2 weeks ago before the public release late last week.

The deck features a mirrored card backs with the iconic Madison emblems on the pink card backs. Like most of the recent Madison releases, the court cards are standard with the exception of the King of Diamonds. The Ace of Spades and Jokers are carried over from the White Rounders. The deck is housed in a minimalistic tuck box with the Madison spades on the front in pink!

From Ellusionist, the Gold Madison Rounders is a tribute to the White Rounders, Daniel Madison's favorite deck from his own line of playing cards. The Gold Rounders is the second deck playing cards release on Black Friday 2017, along with Talons Playing Cards.

The deck features a minimalistic tuck box with the Madison spades on the front and mirrored iconic emblem on the back printed in stunning gold foil. I don't know what it is, but the white space and gold foil made the simple tuck look really attractive!
