Kickstarter: 7 Questions with Jackson Robinson of Kings Wild Project

Earlier this month, Jackson Robinson of Kings Wild Project released The Independence, a playing card series inspired by the American Revolution, featuring both a Continentals Deck and a British deck. Within 10 hours, the project was fully funded and is now trending towards 244% of the funding goal! Incredible! Considering that this is a little project that Jackson has been working on for a while but had to be bumped up the schedule due to production issues with the scheduled Army Deck.

Between his busy schedule, we were able to catch-up with Jackson for a quick Q&A on the future of Kings Wild Project, the inspiration behind the Independence and his thoughts on Kickstarter.

2013 was a great year for Kings Wild Project. Can you tell us what you have been up to since the last project?
Yes, 2013 was a crazy awesome year. I never imagined that Kings Wild would take off the way that it did. And 2014 has been following that same crazy wild ride. This year, my family and my business moved to Memphis, TN. We’ve launched our own fulfillment branch. Cards have to be shipped so carefully to protect their 'collectibility' - and I have learned so much through my previous projects about shipping cards, I wanted to put that knowledge to use by shipping my own cards as well as helping other card projects get their decks out in the best possible conditions.

We’ve also got some other things planned for this year, including The Hive. It will be our first deck that I haven’t actually done the artwork for. I really have connected with the community of deck designers out there and I want Kings Wild to be a place where other artists can be mentored and see their projects come to life.

We’ve got other things planned that I can’t share just yet but trust me when I say - it’s gonna be awesome!

What is your inspiration behind The Independence? How did you come up with the idea?
When I first started Kings Wild Project last year, I would write down all kinds of ideas for decks. I love history and especially American History and early American art, so it was a no-brainer to have a deck from American roots - the revolution.

Can you briefly go through the design evolution of one of your unique card design?
First, I start out with tons of research and reference. Then I do a rough concept, and I keep refining and refining until I get what’s in my head to appear on the card.

The Independence was funded in 10 hours and according to our data provider- Kickspy, the project is trending towards 244%. What are your thoughts in terms of support received, the successful funding of your project and what’s next?
Each kickstarter continues to blow me away. The support is unbelievable. I love the Kickstarter platform because it allows people to be so involved in the process. My crew has been so awesome. I’m developing a plan to take that same environment and community and transfer it to my website as we move towards that direction. It will include a pre-order system and funding goals similar to Kickstarter.

That sounds awesome! What are your thoughts about the continuous strong growth of playing card projects on Kickstarter?
Some people might see all this growth as competition but I think it just elevates the art of playing cards and the world of card collecting, which is beneficial for everyone. But with more card project out there, it gives backers more choices of what they want to support. That means the designs and art has to be top notch. A project that would have been easily funded last year may not be successfully funded this year. Backers are looking for the best of the best of the projects to see those come to life.

You have previously launched 3 successful playing cards projects on Kickstarter. Are there any takeaway lessons from your previous projects you would like to share?
 + Bring your A game. As I said above, people will not support a project that is not a well thought out idea with stellar artwork. Don’t expect to get funded with something you threw together over the weekend.
+ Do your research on all your costs. Getting funded is only half the story. There is no faster way to get into financial trouble than to get funded and not have a solid plan of what you are doing.
+ Backers Beware. I encourage backers to be careful also. If your project creator is not in constant contact with you - something is wrong. A few backers might get annoyed with the number of updates I send out, but the majority of them feel secure because they know I am not scamming them out of money. It’s unfortunate because this happened to a really big deck recently.  

Finally, what are your favourite playing card decks and why?
Tiger #101 - This is my favorite vintage deck. It was the first deck produced by USPCC and it was the beginning of the era of modern cards. I love them.
New Era #46 - Another vintage favorite. The court cards were revolutionary and non-standard. I am a big fan of doing non standard court cards, as fans can see.

Right now, I am really liking Whispering Imps by Chris Chelko as a modern deck. I think they have a great design and I’m a big fan of the tuck case.

The Independence will be available in two sets- The Continental and The Crown deck. Two editions available: Standard and Limited Edition (LE).The LE decks feature the new Kings Wild Exclusive custom fold over tuck case and the set will come wrapped in a vintage style vellum paper and have a removable 2-inch-wide belly band that is also foiled and embossed.

Revealed: The United States Playing Card Co. presents Civil War by Jackson Robinson

There is no denying that Jackson Robinson and the Kings Wild Project have made an impact on the playing card industry as well as the crowd funding venue Kickstarter. Jackson has taken a concept and turned it into a business. Not one to sit back and wait, Jackson’s constantly writing the next chapter for the Kings Wild Project as well as himself. The Kings Wild Fulfilment Center was the 1st branch out for the company, and just recently Jackson launched his in house crowd funding platform, Kings Wild Funded that will showcase Kings Wild Projects by Jackson as well as up and coming artists designing decks under the Kings Wild Project’s branding.

Another chapter is right around the corner for Jackson. It’s not a secret or surprise that Jackson was approached by the United States Playing Card Company a while back and contracted to produce a deck for the US based printer. After all, they are very familiar with Jacksons work, having produced all of his projects to date.  The first Official USPC Exclusive playing cards designed by Jackson Robinson will be The Civil War Series; this project will mark the first non-kickstarter project for Jackson and is scheduled for release sometime in the near future.

The historically themed Series will consist of 4 decks, 2 Standard Editions and 2 Limited Edition, both featuring the meticulous detail and design standards we’ve grown accustomed to from Jackson. The Civil War Standard Editions will represent the North Union in a Blue deck and the Confederate South in a Red Deck. The Standard Editions will be released across multiple USPC outlets including their Bicycle web site. The Limited Edition decks will feature the same Tuck and Card design as the Standard Decks, but will be presented in an embossed and foiled tuck box and a limited print run of only 1500 decks of each color.

The Limited Edition decks will be available exclusively on the Kings Wild Project web site for purchase in the near future, so keep an eye out.

First Look: Kings Wild's Artist for the Hive Deck

On January 2014, Kings Wild released a teaser image giving us a glimpse of what the upcoming playing card look like. The image reveals little besides the name of the deck, the bee hive inspired back and it is from the newest Kings Wild artist.

Since then, the Hive deck as it is now known has been under the radar. Kings Wild has kept quiet about the design of the cards, the tuck box or even the identify of the artist. Until now.

If you've backed Kings Wild's Sherlock Holmes Playing Cards and the Independence Playing Cards project,  you have probably seen Brendan in the comments section answering backer's queries as part of the Kings Crew.

As part of the exclusive, Brendan sat down with Kardify to talk about his background, how he became a Kings Wild artist, his passion for the Hive deck and his future with Kings Wild. Before we begin, I want to thank Kings Wild for this exclusive reveal and the unreleased images of the deck & the Ace of Spades.


Could you introduce yourself to our readers? What is your design background?
I am a freelance illustrator that works out of Toronto, Canada. A few years ago, I graduated from the flying checked shoebox in the sky that is called OCAD with a bachelor in designs in illustration, which sounds like a mouthful. There is a lot of creativity in both sides of my family, but not a lot of artist so it felt fun to be a first in my family.

How did you end up being a Kings Wild artist?
It all started last year when Jackson was doing Google Hangouts with backers and crew members during the Sherlock Holmes Kickstarter project. We got talking and I told him that I was an illustrator. I started to show off my work to Jackson. He liked what he saw and suggested that we collaborated together on a project.

I was hesitant as first as it s kind of a daunting project to create 54 individual artworks (52 cards plus 2 jokers, as most decks these days come with a double backer and blank card). But I slowly warmed up to the idea. I thought it was a great way for both of us to get the best of both worlds in a new venture.

For me, I could create a deck and not worry about the fulfillment side, which I am man enough to admit gives me nightmares, and for Jackson, it was a way to build this company further in creating a platform to work with other artist in creating beautiful functional works of art in a deck of playing cards.

Can you describe the Hive deck and why you’re passionate about it?
The Hive deck comes from my love of the Bee deck of playing card by USPCC. I grew up watching Hong Kong cinema as a kid where the Bee deck is used in a lot of gambling and casino movies. I remember playing with a deck of Bee cards as a kid and loving that wonderful Ace of Spaces and the fun jokers. I wanted to create a deck that takes inspiration from that as well as from other beautiful decks from the past.  

From the teaser pictures, I really like the clean back design and the beautiful illustrated Queen of Hearts! What role did you play in the art direction and how much time did you spend working on the deck?
Thank you for those kind words about the cards. I've actually had a lot of free range in working with Jackson. I think he understands from an artist and art director point of view where you need to step in where you should just leave creativity to work if it's working best. The old adage of "if it's not broken, don't fix it" comes to mind. I don't keep track of time when I work as time honestly flies by when things are getting done, but I start with a very traditional design process of though through thumbnails to roughs to taking things into the computer to create the final version. Depending on how the rough work is going, it can taken between 1-2 days to get a card finished. It's funny to admit that I had more trouble designing the tuckbox as packaging is not one of my strengths.

What are your thoughts about the growth of custom playing cards in the past year? Are you planning to release more decks under the Kings Wild label in the future?
I think it's been great to see the growth of custom playing cards within the last year or two. It's wonderful to see all these artist and designers breathing new life back into playing cards. It feels like a Renaissance for custom playing cards now. I've definitely got a few ideas that I'm working through at the moment, but there's no rush so I'm letting the ideas brew and stew until I feel that they're ready. I'm definitely looking forward to working with Jackson again as Kings Wild artist. It's been a lot of fun for the both of us and I just can't wait for this first deck to finally become a reality.  

What are your three favorite non-Kings Wild playing cards?
That's honestly a tough question. There's way too many decks on the market that are just beyond amazing. But to bring the list down to three, in no particular order I'd have to say the JAQK, that first got me into playing card collecting, Empire by Lee McKenzie with its beautiful and intricate design that plays with the traditional playing card design and Pagan by Uusi with its great artwork and wonderful theme.

Finally, do you have any other words of wisdom for aspiring artists and designers?
Just keep creating and striving to get better. I think it's all too easy for any of us to give up for whatever reason or just be satisfied with the current level we've attained. I love to look back and see the growth of where I've been and seeing where I am today.

Coming Soon: 'Army' by Kings Wild Project

Coming soon from Kings Wild Project, a beautiful re-imagining of the vintage Russell, Morgan and Co. Army No. 303 Playing Cards originally produced c. 1910

Kings Wild Project has taken the essence of the original deck and given it an amazing re-working to produce a stunning homage to the originals. The Army deck will be available in 4 versions, each with its own unique design elements. The Standard Edition which takes many of its design elements directly from the vintage release will be available in one standalone version featuring custom Ace of Spades and custom court cards.

The “Premium” Edition will be available in a Branded and Un-Branded version. The design is a more stylized vision of Army elements and the design is in black and white with Gold Branding of the Bicycle logo on the Branded version and Gold Army Branding on the Un-Branded version. 

The last of the designs is the Limited Edition Army deck, a stunning black on black embossed tuck box with Gold Foil accents. A “Display” box version will also be available of the Limited Edition deck.

Each version features a unique back design, Ace of Spades and Joker. The Premium and Limited version come with a Gold Foil seal featuring the lone single Star the Army has become remembered for.

This project will be available via Kickstarter on August 30th.

Top 12: Playing Cards of 2014

It's been an amazing year! As we near the end of what's been a busy and successful year for playing cards, we are going to take one last look back at 2014. Compiling the list has been a lot fun but hard work as there are just so many quality decks this year, making it difficult to narrow them down. 12. LUXX

Earlier this year, a teaser image of LUXX was circulated to the customers of JP Playing Cards and what a buzz it has generated around the playing cards community! This privately funded deck of cards is created by Paul Middleton and designed by the talented Randy Butterfield. LUXX is elegant, intricate and beautiful whilst remaining practical and fun to use.

11. Origins: Grail Edition

Inspired by the elegance and charm of playing card history, designer and illustrator Rick Davidson has masterfully created Origins Playing Cards. All of the Grail cards are individually researched and custom designed. The amazing fine details on the backs features metallic gold ink. The tuck case is printed on high quality stock, fully embossed and the box details is embellished with gloss gold foil, giving it a touch of elegance and sophistication.

10. Aquila Limited Edition

A collaboration between Three of Clubs and Kardify Projects, Aquila Limited Edition Playing Cards are meticulously designed by Indonesian graphic artist, Ade Suryana. This stunning deck is inspired by the Garuda Wisnu Kencana in Bali, Indonesia. Featuring fully custom back design, eye-catching Ace of Spades, diptych Jokers and stunning courts. The tuck looks incredible with elegant gold foil plus embossing on imported paper giving it a very luxurious feel.

9. Requiem

One of our most anticipated 2014 project, Requiem Playing Cards is a stunning deck created by Lorenzo Gaggiotti. This unique deck is 100% custom and features darkness and pain as a theme. The suits are made out of broken Hearts, Clubs with thorns, cracked Diamonds and dry leaves as Spades. Pips are unique and the gold metallic ink on this blood red deck gives it a touch of class.

8. Seven Seas

First amazing playing card project by Brain Vessel Creative! What a great experience! The Seven Seas Playing Cards is a customized nautical themed deck with beautifully illustrated images of pirates, ghost ships, sea creatures and life on the high seas. The deck is about the dichotomy of a life at sea.

7. Hive

The Limited Edition Hive Playing Card is designed and illustrated by Brendan Hong and independently produced by Kings Wild Project. Inspired by classic playing card art, this fully customized 54 card deck that comes with its own unique court cards to customized back design to Bee inspired Ace of spades. The deck comes in matching set of blue and red back design.

6. Sherlock Holmes: Baker Street Edition

Created by Kings Wild Project, the Sherlock Holmes Playing Cards: Baker Street Edition is the flagship deck of the entire Sherlock Holmes Series. The Baker Street Edition features an intricate back design that includes iconic elements from many of the beloved stories. The court cards for the Baker Street Edition are inspired by the original late 19th & 20th century engravings and illustrations that were released with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novels and short stories. The tuck case features premium paper stock with embossing and Gold foiling and is printed both on the inside and out.

5. Zenith

Zenith is the first deck in the Encarded Signature Series masterfully designed by Paul Carpenter. This impressive deck was self-funded with a very limited release of only 1000 numbered decks. Needless to say they sold out relatively quickly and have found their way onto the Sought After and Must Have lists of many collectors and enthusiast. Housed in a special sideways opening tuck box made of elegant, thick matte black paper, Zenith is adorned with amazingly detailed and vibrant holographic silver foil and sealed with a sequentially numbered seal under the cellophane.

4. RUN: Bankroll Edition

Produced by Jason Brumbalow and Murphy's Magic the Limited RUN series captures detail, stunning looks and an attitude. Beautiful presentation with the outer shell case and just as impressive tuck box makes the RUN a unique concept that is garnering much attention. The deck is 100% Custom from every aspect in and out. Familiar yet different court cards tie the custom Jokers, Ace of Spades and stylized pips together.

3. Independence

This one came as a surprise in 2014. Created by Kings Wild Project, the Independence playing card series is inspired by the American Revolution, featuring both a Continentals Deck and a British (Crown) deck. The courts, back design, diptych joker and Ace of Spaces are fully customized. The tuckcase is created to Kings Wild standards with embossing, custom numbered seals, artwork and foiling both inside and outside the tuckcase.

 2. Ornate - Obsidian Edition

One word: Stunning! This Limited Obsidian Edition decks are part of the White Ornate series. Meticulously designed by Randy Butterfield and produced by HOPC, this beautiful deck exudes elegance. The tuck box is truly mesmerizing, crafted from a deep matte black vellum paper. The design has been carefully stamped in Black and Gold foil, giving the box a shimmer and shine. As a bonus, the inside of the tuck is coated in a solid wall of gold foil.

1. 52 Plus Joker: The Club Deck

Designed by Jackson Robinson, the Club Deck was offered exclusively to attendees of this years 52 Plus Joker Convention being held in Charleston, South Carolina. This ultra-rare deck is just amazing, a bright white two piece "Slip Case" accented by silver foil houses the just as spectacular cards featuring a mirrored and foiled back design of the "52" script. The deck also features a custom Ace of Spades, beautifully rich custom court cards and two custom Jokers depicting the 52 Plus Joker Logo. The Club Deck also features a custom numbered seal.

Collections: Wasteland by Kings Wild Project

Inspired by the game of the same name, Wasteland was a collaboration between inXile Entertainment and Kings Wild Project. A post apocalyptic, high energy game and a deck with the same attitude. The building blocks of this venture started a while back, when the two Kickstarter project creators, Jackson Robinson and Brian Fargo were two of the subjects featured in the Crowd Funding documentary Capital C. The documentary followed 3 projects, two which were Wastelands 2 and Federal 52. The rest, as they say, is history.

Jackson Robinson's talent and attention to detail shine through on Wasteland. The "Radioactive" edition is a fun and entertaining nod to the video game, bright colors, weathered looks and edge, along with an assortment of unique characters making up the court cards.

A beautifully appropriate Ace of Spades anchors the black and red band running through the face and court cards giving the deck a nice connection when fanned. The eerie yet entertaining Jokers fit right in with the inspiration of the deck and I can't help but love the "Big Baby" Joker sporting the Kings Wild Logo on his belly. The full color illustrations on the standard deck are gritty, detailed and perfectly at home in this deck. The Radioactive edition is full of color and punch, from the look to the design elements, the deck just screams the over the top look and feel of the video game. The full color matte tuck case wraps this package up perfectly and is sealed off with a gold foil seal tagged with a radioactive logo.

I have to be honest though, what really stands out on this project for me is the Kickstarter Exclusive Desert Rangers Edition. A lot of decks use "Bling" for the sake of Bling, but when that "Bling" is used in a perfect balance it's just remarkable. The Desert Rangers isn't just a tuck swap, and we'll get to the tuck in a minute. The decks do share the same illustrations, but the face cards and courts take on a monochrome look with gold metallic ink accenting the band on the faces and courts, while the back design takes on a entirely new look.

Let's start with the tuck. Constructed of a nice heavy stock, in an antique gold foil, with an amazing stressed and weathered  look that the renders did no justice to. The embossed Desert Rangers star on the front and the Wasteland band on the back shows that details do matter. It's all so subtle, but so perfectly used its hard to discount how well planned the look of this deck was. Sealing off the deck is the iconic Kings Wild Gas Mask Logo which has never looked more at home. 

The back design is just amazing. The subtle details in the frame work on the weathered black backdrop are perfect. Top it off with two beautiful gold foil Desert Rangers "Badges" in a mirrored "Rider Back" layout and it's perfection. Printed by the Expert Playing Card Co., they continue to perfect their work with foil and it's application on playing cards. The Desert Rangers Edition was an awesome surprise when I opened it. Its difficult to convey in renders what the finished product will look like, and on the flip side, it's sometimes difficult to deliver the concept to the finished product...Desert Rangers surpassed my expectations.  

Both versions are great, but there is no hiding which deck stands out of the two. With Desert Rangers being a Kickstarter Exclusive, it may take a little looking around the secondary market for one, but this is one of those decks worth adding to your collection if the concept appeals to you. The Emerald Tally Ho's are now LIVE on Kickstarter!

At first glance the Emerald Tally Ho's by Kings Wild Project may look like a re-color, but nothing could be further from the truth. The Emerald Edition has a completely new and unique back design with a beautiful green and purple color pallet. The Emerald Edition continues the Jackson Robinson Series which began earlier this year with the Scarlett Tally Ho's. Both decks have a visual connection, as well as a family connection and eloquently go together, but at the same time stand alone as individually unique, much like the people who inspired them.

"As an artist, I feel designing cards should always be something more than just putting 56 pieces of paper in a box and call it done. Stories are what inspire me so I try to start every one of my projects with a story to tell. In the case of the Scarlett & Emerald Tally Ho decks, that story is my family. Without getting to sentimental, there is no better inspiration for me than my daughters. They are the reason I do what I do and it is a no brainer for me to create a deck that will give them something to give to their kids one day. That’s why I gave the Legacy Edition the name I did"

The Emerald Tally-Ho’s are scheduled to launch Saturday, May 2nd at 12:00pm Central on Kickstarter. The project will offer a variety of reward tiers appealing to a wide variety of playing card aficionados. Emerald starts with the  Limited Edition for those who just enjoy Jackson Robinson’s work and rounds off with the LTD Emerald Legacy Edition for those seeking the rare and collectable and if you want to keep that Collectable sealed, the project will once again offer display decks at a very attractive price point.
