The Successor Playing Cards Smashes its Kickstarter Funding Goal in 5 Minutes

We’ve seen no shortage of Kickstarter success stories over the past weeks, but it’s always amazing to hear about playing cards that are somehow able to meet their funding goals in short periods of time, and the Successor playing cards by The Gentleman Wake (TGW) is no exception.

The Kickstarter project went live yesterday, and within just five minutes, it met its funding goal of $99,750. Not only that, but it also completely smashed that goal and is sitting at $243,000+ worth of pledges at the time of writing.

Designed in collaboration with Kevin Cantrell, The Successor Playing Cards evokes art from the 15th-century cathedrals, canvases, and manuscripts. All of the aspects from the pips to the courts are customized, featuring artworks that combine ancient historical illustration with the classical design of a deck of playing cards.

All of the Aces featured massive pips with ornate designs. The numbered cards featured pips with golden details within, arranged with smaller icons in-between spaces. The court cards are illustrated close to the classical courts yet based on historical references to the medieval times.

Both Jokers featured well-done illustrations of historical figures in a royal kingdom: The Annoiter, the priest who will coronate the royal, and the Anointed, the royal who will be crowned on the throne. The series tells a story of a tale of trials and betrayal of royal succession.

There are a total of 6 editions in the series: 2 standard editions and 4 exclusive limited editions. There are two different card back designs within the series: one featured an hourglass on the center (the first four editions), while the other featured an ambigram of “Successor” on the center (the last two editions). The center element is surrounded by an intricate framework decorated with royal crowns, filigrees, and most importantly, TGW’s mascot the rhinoceros beetle.

The standard editions are “Regal Red” and “Royal Blue”, featuring red and blue main colors with Pantone metallic ink on the details. The first two exclusive editions are “Imperial Black” and “White Monarch”, featuring black and white main color with gold cold foiling on the details – the cards for “White Monarch” will be gilded with gold foil.

The last two exclusive editions are “Dynastinae Rex” and “Dynastinae Prism”, featuring green and purple main colors with gold and holographic cold foiling on the details respectively – the cards for “Rex” will be gilded with gold foil, while cards for “Prism” will be gilded with holographic foil. The cards will be produced by Cartamundi on B9 Slimline stock with a linen finish.

The tuck box for the decks in the series is heavily customized with intricate artworks with many levels of finishes. They are done with premium quality matte stock with 5 layers of metallic foiling complete with 3D strategic embossing. The tuck box for “Rex” featured gold and black holographic foiling while the tuck box for “Prism” featured purple and holographic foiling. For both “White Monarch” and “Dynastinae Prism”, the tuck box has a sleeve made of matte stock with a zinc-alloy metal cast sculpture attached to it – gold sculpture for “White Monarch” and silver sculpture for “Dynastinae Prism”. All of the tuck boxes are done by Studio Pression from France.

To sum up the collection, the series is completed with a custom-made storage box to contain all of the available editions. This box is made of piano-black lacquered wood with laser-etched gold foil inlays along with a gold-plated zinc-alloy metallic sculpture lid. The box is fashioned to look like the king’s royal sarcophagus.

Pledge starts from $19 for a single deck of standard edition to up to $400 to get a complete set on Kickstarter. Funding ends on June 24, 2022.

Luxury. Elegant. Royal.

During the initial release, the demand for the White Monarchs were so overwhelming that Theory11's servers crashed. The White Monarchs are a limited edition version of the regular Monarch Playing Cards. This deck is made with FSC-certiifed paper and embossed box with stunning gold foil.

They look like they belong in a palace.

Gold metallic foil surrounds the elegant white tuck, with a vintage, timeless aesthetic. Absolutely breathtaking! ... and oh, they do handle as good as they look.

The Monarch playing card decks are available at JP Games.

Created to mark Theory11’s 18th anniversary, the Monarch Prestige Edition revisits one of the brand’s most recognizable designs and pushes it into true luxury territory. The card backs are fully foiled, with a radiant gold background overlaid by dark bronze foil, creating dramatic depth and a dynamic play of light from every angle.

This edition reflects nearly two decades of refinement in premium playing card design, transforming the familiar Monarch aesthetic into a statement piece that emphasizes craftsmanship, material richness, and visual impact rather than reinvention.

Only available through special promotions on Theory11.

[Update] The Mandarin Monarchs are now on Theory11.com

Happy Lunar New Year! To celebrate the auspicious occasion, Theory11 has teased the release of a brand new Monarch! The Mandarin Edition Monarchs sports an orange colorway after the popular small citrus fruit.

A close-up view of the teaser image reveals the stunning gold embossing of the tuck box. Like all previous Monarchs, the court cards will have standard faces and meticulously detailed line work the card backs most likely in the orange colorway, consistent to the tuck box.

Printed at the United States Playing Card Company. The deck will be released on Friday, 24th January at 3PM ET. Available this week only. Due to the limited nature of this deck, we are pretty sure these will go fast!

White Monarch Limited Edition Playing Cards

During the initial release, the demand for the White Monarchs were so overwhelming that the servers crashed. The White Monarchs are a limited edition version of the regular Monarch Playing Cards. This deck is made with the same FSC-certiifed paper and embossed box with gold foil that the original Monarch deck has. The main difference here is this deck is white instead of blue and quantities are much more limited.

The box is beautiful. It has two latin inscriptions on the box, "De Duobus Maliz, Minus Est Semper Eligenoum" ("Of two evils, the lesser must always be chosen" -Thomas Kempis) and, "Cerca Trova" (Seek and ye shall find). The gold embossings are stunning, and it is by far one of the the best card box I have ever seen.

The cards, although made with imported paper were printed at the United States Playing Card Company. The pips are standard but they do look bigger. The ace of spades is very detailed and look really really charming.

The court cards have standard faces but they do have a slightly muted colour with gold ink in place of the yellow on the regular Bicycle decks. The backs for me is a little disappointing. Don't get me wrong... the design is meticulously detailed and do look sophisticated with the gold ink. The only thing is that it looks really vanilla and muted. Expected a little more from a limited edition deck.

This deck is smooth as butter! Fans, faros and spreads feels awesome due to the relatively thick stock with a nice finish.

Pros:
- Elegant and beautiful box design
- Sophisticated backs

Cons:
- Standard court faces
- Colours seems muted

Overall:
- 4/5

Butterfly Playing Cards by TCC Fashion

Inspired by the timeless allure of butterflies, TCC Fashion’s Butterfly Playing Cards blend natural beauty with refined artistry. Drawing from centuries of artistic reverence for these delicate creatures, the decks evoke transformation, freedom, and elegance through cold foil and meticulously crafted design.

Each deck celebrates one of four iconic butterfly species: Blue Morpho, Monarch, Green-banded Swallowtail, and the Purple Emperor. Each translating their vibrant wings and iridescent textures into shimmering cold foil backs and custom tuck boxes.

The tuck boxes are masterpieces themselves, with die-cut windows, color-matched foils, embossed details, and a glimmering finish that mimics light catching on a butterfly's wings.

The Blue Morpho, featured in the Prism Deck, is brought to life through blue foil and a light-reactive shimmer that captures the butterfly’s structural iridescence.

The Amber Deck pays tribute to the migrating Monarch with rich amber-orange tones and elegant black and white contrasts.

The Green Deck highlights the jade-toned Green-banded Swallowtail with tactile embossing and pale green foiling. Each card design maintains a visual harmony across the decks while expressing the unique essence of its namesake butterfly.

For collectors, the Collection Boxset elevates the experience with a luxurious 3D pop-up box that opens to reveal a magical butterfly garden. Inside are four gilded decks, including the exclusive Somnium Deck inspired by the rare Purple Emperor. Its deep purple and silver tones, accented with gold edges, make it a dreamlike tribute to night flight and quiet majesty.

Each card face is adorned with translucent floral and butterfly motifs, creating a soft, ethereal atmosphere. Courts and pips alike blend natural elements into a cohesive, immersive world where nature and design meet. The cards offer not just gameplay, but an artful experience—visual, tactile, and deeply collectible.

With only 500 to 1500 decks produced per edition and multiple tiers including bundles and a full Allin Set, these decks are more than cards; they’re preserved moments of beauty in motion. Pledge starts at $9 on Kickstarter.

Theory11 Releases Red Monarch Playing Cards

Theory11 released the original Monarchs in 2011 and it quickly became one of Theory11's best-selling deck. Then there is the Limited Edition White Monarchs, which overloaded the servers due to high demand.

This year, they're back; and this time... in red. According to the marketing material, the back design has been updated with a vibrant and a more dramatic shade of red.

The tuck case has been updated as well with the highest quality paper ever used on a deck of cards. This luxurious new paper gives the tuck a rich, matte finish — incredibly soft to the touch.

The cards are printed on Q1 quality paper, with ultra-thin borders, first introduced on our Animal Kingdom Playing Cards.

Available for $6.95/deck from Theory11.com

First Look: Kings of India Playing Cards by Humble Raja Part II

[Update] Kings of India Playing Cards are now LIVE on Kickstarter!

In the second part of our first look of Kings of India Playing Cards, we look into the details pertaining to this exotic deck and the inspiration behind the artwork.

Kings of India Playing Cards is the debut deck of Humble Raja, crafted by the design-obsessed duo, Bhavesh & Reena Mistry from Montréal. It will be printed by the United States Playing Card Company on their air-cushioned Bicycle stock with an intricate, gold-foiled tuck in peacock green.

Kings of India was created to explore the four greatest dynasties of India; each is represented by a suit to reveal the marvels and legends of India's royal courts. 100% custom, the artwork behind the Kings of India playing cards has been fully illustrated from scratch - from the backs, aces, jokers and pips.

The courts reveal details of a legendary monarch, his queen and a notable successor from the Maurya, Gupta, Chola & Mughal dynasties. Through extensive research sourced from artifacts, sculptures, folklore and architecture the design of each character tells a story of their legacy, gives clues into their personalities and even models the fashion sense of the time.

Though these court cards have bold personalities they still follow key features of the modern British court card, so the one-eyed royals and suicide king are well taken care of.  Regardless of age, culture and education, these playing cards will allow you to discover some extravagant characters, surprising facts and curiosities of India’s culture; what you find inside might just spark an unexpected interest.

[Update] Kings of India Playing Cards are now LIVE on Kickstarter!

Kings of India will be available via Kickstarter on Wednesday, July 15th at 12:00 EST. We wish the team at Humble Raja great success.

To keep up to date on the latest happenings from Humble Raja, follow them on their Facebook page.

Godzilla X Kong Playing Cards

For the past two years, Candice & Torres, the team behind Room One Decks has created a series of playing cards, their first one being Oppenheimer Playing Cards, a deck based on Christopher Nolan’s latest biography film. The deck won the best “Rookie Deck” in UC’s DOTY 2023. For this latest playing cards project, Room One Decks has collaborated with TOHO and Legendary Pictures to produce officially licensed Godzilla X Kong Playing Cards!

As the title suggests, the deck is based on the titular gigantic monsters: Godzilla the titan lizard and Kong the titan gorilla. They each have their respective deck. Kong Playing Cards shows a light color palette, while Godzilla Playing Cards comes in a darker colorway.

The back design features a two-way illustration of a bordered design framing the monsters. You can notice the logo of Monarch, a research organization founded to research and study these giants.

The Number cards feature slight customization: while the arrangement of pips are standard, one of the pips for each number features the silhouette of the Titans. The court cards feature two-way illustrations of the titans featured in the latest movie they’re based on: the main titular titans Godzilla and Kong as Spades and Hearts courts respectively, along with the opposing titans Skar King and Shimo as Clubs and Diamonds courts respectively.

There are two editions available during the Kickstarter campaign: Standard and Special Editions. The Standard Edition tuck box comes with embossed artwork along with hot foiling. The Special Edition features tuck box with the same features, with a signature design from Room One: Accordion Tuck Box which the front of the box features a window showcasing the layered artwork of each respective titan.

This layered accordion artwork can be removed from the box. Also, the cards for the Special Editions will have special add-ons: metallic foil accents on the back design and gilding on the edge – gold foil for Kong and magenta foil for Godzilla.

Pledge starts from $17 on Kickstarter.
