Get Your Hands On The Last Remaining Dystopia Playing Cards

To celebrate October and Halloween, the guys at  Joker and the Thief is making the last of Dystopia Playing Cards available for 24 HOURS ONLY or until sold out. Dystopia is a disturbed tribute to cult movie Mad Max, Muscle Car Culture, the Australian Film Industry and Outback.

Back in 2017, Joker and the Thief intended to create a special limited edition of 500 all chrome foil Dystopia decks. To make it extra special, they hand signed 500 Dystopia ace of spades but ended up scrapping the project and just re-boxing the decks into normal Dystopia boxes and distributing them with the unsigned cards. Only 144 long out of print, signed decks remained and made available for sale for the last time on FRIDAY at 7AM PDT.

Kickstarter: 3 Questions with Jason of Seers Laetus Playing Cards

Saxon and Jason have been friends for many years and attended the same high school. They would play with cards and show each other tricks and flourishes. One day Jason suggested to Saxon that it would be fun to make their own deck and give back to the community. That was in the GCSE year and they spent all of that time to conceptualize the deck. Then early in their A-Levels year, Jason and Saxon launched the Seers v1. Jason told Kardify,

Although Seers V1 didn't fund I kept on designing with Saxon's support and developed the Aspectu design and then the Laetus as well as more exciting decks for next year and following years! Although most are still just ideas!

Seers Laetus is the third deck by Seers Playing Cards currently seeking funds on Kickstarter. The contrasting colorway combined with the geometric card backs makes this deck truly striking. Crafted for cardistry, the deck offers two different rear fanning designs that will make flourishes stand out. The pips and indices are custom and the courts are pretty much standard with updated colorway.

Last week, we had a quick chat with Jason about the inspiration behind Seers Laetus, the community, and their favorite flourish and deck.

What is your inspiration behind the Seers Laetus Playing Cards? How did you come up with the idea? 
As I said on Instagram Saxon hit me really hard with a big stick! No, I was looking at playing cards online and thought 'wow I have an idea!' after some adjustments to he initial design (spanning over a few weeks) we had a back design down, it's a bit of a boring story but it is the truth.

We first noticed Seers Playing Cards on Instagram. What do you think of the community in terms of the feedback and support that you’ve been getting? 
Our community on Instagram (@theseersplayingcards) is especially friendly we always receive a great amount of support. Especially with our new decks. Our community and the general cardistry community on Instagram is absolutely awesome they are very helpful for us!

Finally, what are your favorite flourish and/or playing card decks?
My personal favorite flourish is the riffle fan, and my favorite deck is the Magus we plan to release next year, Saxon and I both love the Orbits they're amazing!

Kickstarter: 5 Things You Should Know About Western Tropic Playing Cards

Every once in awhile a card game comes out that makes you go... "why didn't I think of that??". This is one of those games. Conceptualized by Len Kendall and currently funding on Kickstarter, Western Tropic takes a standard game and evolves it into something greater. Brilliant!

Western Tropic is played with a deck of standard playing cards but it utilizes a set of custom components and symbols that give the game far more depth. The game includes a custom 52-card deck that can be used for any standard card game. In addition to the typical suits you see on a deck of cards, the Western Tropic deck includes suits that remind you of each suit's abilities.

The gameplay utilizes a 5x5 grid that acts as a communal, but ever-changing set of cards that players use to create the best possible poker hand. Much like Texas Hold'em, each player has hole cards that are unique to them. What makes it fun and challenging is the use of an extra (third) hole card each round that can be traded in, to grant various actions such as moving your character around the grid, or changing the grid, altogether.

Here are 5 things you should know about Western Tropic:

1. This deck of custom cards was originally designed for use with the upcoming tabletop game Western Tropic. The game takes the spirit of Texas Hold'em poker, but adds significantly more depth and strategy to the game by utilizing additional components and rules.

2. The playing cards that come with the deck, art by graphic designer Brooks Engel (Instagram: @nowherelandsupply), received so much attention. Len told Kardify," I decided to offer the deck on its own for those who were only interested in the playing cards. Since there is a strong community of playing card collectors, this has proven to be a very popular option for the Kickstarter campaign. The deck has also picked up quite a bit of attention on Reddit.

3. The theme of the game and the corresponding design is a juxtaposition of two genres that generally don't go together: The Wild West and Tropical/Jungle. The premise of the game is that an eccentric billionaire hosts an annual card game tournament on a remote island in the Pacific. Since he's a fan of Westerns, he has recreated an old west town in the middle of this island (think West World if you've seen that show). "The real-world island that actually inspired the game is called the Palmyra Atoll. I even had an artist sketch a fictionalized version of the island to add further detail to the world I'm building around this game (image below)".

4. While these two opposing themes are mixed in through-out the full game, you can also see the subtle combination of them solely in the card deck. "The tuck box focuses primarily on the island art (with hidden skull graphic created by the design) while the actual cards are a combination of the two themes. For example, the King card leans more into the cowboy feel, but the leaves surrounding him still tie back to the jungle elements. The overall color scheme also is meant to reference both desert and the jungle environments."

5. As of right now, Len is only going to produce/sell these cards via the Kickstarter campaign. It will be active until October 11th. The actual cards will then move into production and will be available by or before February.

2019 marks the 30th anniversary of Nintendo's first handheld console, the Game Boy. TCC Playing Cards has released the PIXEL V2 Playing Cards Collector Set to celebrate the occasion.

Like the PIXEL V1, PIXEL V2 applied the same design concept to the collector box set that looks like the popular handheld console from the 90s. The graphical style has quite a bit of charm. According to the product description,

On the screen part, we used raster design. When the raster is turned up and down, the angle between the eyes and the raster will change. Break the boundary between dynamic and static, showing the hidden animation effect. With the help of a raster plate, kitty, puppy and PIXEL images are superimposed on the screen area at the same time, showing a succession of images, cool and visual.

Pixel art is used throughout to great effect. Also, the retro design elements and the color scheme mimic the popular console. These include the black-and-white theme, a yellow palette, a brown tone, and full-color reminiscent of the Game Boy Color.

Despite its 8-bit mimicry, both decks are beautifully detailed. The court cards on each deck have been redesigned with each suit featuring the dog and cat- from the Siberian Husky, Labrador, and Beagle

 to Tabby cat, Calico cat, and British Shorthair Cat
... all done in pixel art!
