Alex Pandrea Retires: The Last NOC Deck Released

Alex Pandrea of House of Playing Cards has announced in a recent email that he is officially retiring. After over a decade of designing and producing some of the most iconic custom decks, Pandrea is stepping away from the world of playing cards to pursue new ventures. To mark the end of this chapter, he is offering one final release: the NOC Private Reserve deck.

Pandrea launched his career in 2011 with The Blue Crown, a platform that taught magic and sleight of hand through video tutorials. In 2012, he founded House of Playing Cards, which sold over 1 million decks across 300+ designs, generating over $10 million in sales. Over the years, however, his passion for the playing card business began to wane, leading him to take a break in 2022 after the birth of his first child.

Pandrea is offering his followers a parting gift—the last deck of cards he will ever be involved with, the NOC Private Reserve. This limited-edition deck was secretly printed in 2022 for personal use, and now fans have the chance to own it.

A limited number of hand-autographed decks are also available for those looking for an extra-special keepsake. The deck features advanced hot foil printing on the back design, a luxurious 300gsm matte-finish tuck case with 3D embossing, and Thin Crush card stock by USPCC. Available now for $22 on House of Playing Cards.

The NOC Corporation, a self-built A.I. establishment controlled everything until our protagonist successfully sent back the NOC3000X1 deck in time to the year 2019 with the simple message - keep the magic alive.

The plan worked - humans not only received the message of the threat but discovered advanced technologies within the fibers of the playing cards sent back in time - technologies that would ultimately lead to the now thriving world - the (new) year 3020, safe from threats of A.I. The playing cards were reborn into what we now know them as - NOC30000X2

News: Alex Pandrea and Patrick Kun Releases Green Visa Playing Cards

Created with travel, adventure and discovery in mind, the Green Visa Playing Cards is the continuation to the Visa series by Alex Pandrea and Patrick Kun.

The idea for Visa Playing Cards came in 2016 when Patrick Kun and Alex Pandrea began their journey together, touring and lecturing throughout Asia. While on tour, the idea of a deck of cards that represents "escape, discover, and journey" was inspired- which  designed an ASIA deck, which later turned into the Visa Playing Cards.

This latest edition comes in a deep green color with metallic gold accented design. The face cards are standard with the exception of the Ace of Spades and the jokers. For the magicians, the deck comes with a double backer and includes a duplicate 2 of hearts.

Like the other Visa's before it, the Green Visa Deck will be printed by the United Stated Playing Card Company on the elusive thin crushed stock. Also included with every purchase of the Green Visa Playign Cards is an depth tutorial on how to use the additional cards that come with the Deck. Available now from visaplayingcards.com for $10.

News: Alex Pandrea Releases The Black Edition X Deck

Alex Pandrea has finally released the X Deck after two years. The deck was initially released for Pandrea's Birthday in a "sample" 100 deck run. Not much is known about this deck when it was released as part of the Blue Crown holiday giveaway.

Back in 2017, we asked Alex about the design and the significance of the 3 X's. According to Alex,
This deck was designed to celebrate my 30th birthday. X is 10, and 3 X's is 30 - DUH lol... ALSO, I was born on October 10th (10/10).... and at 10:00 ... so that's another 3 10's. You can see how all this comes together - enough said haha..!

Today, the X Deck is Alex's go-to-deck for ALL magic performances. Simple enough to fit his minimal style, yet stylized enough to give it a vibe. The deck sports a black colorway with playful paint-like X designs on the card backs. The face cards are standard Arrco to give the deck a vintage feel and at the same time maintains familiarity for magic routines and performances.

The deck is printed by the United States Playing Cards Company and is available NOW on houseofplayingcards.com for $15.

News: 5 Things You Didn't Know About NOCs by House of Playing Cards

Alex Pandrea just released the vibrant NOC Sport early this morning, in conjunction with his 30th Birthday. The NOC Sport comes in two different colorway - Neon Green and Electric Pink and spots a sleek new tuck, designed by Toomas Pintson. The decks are printed by the U.S. Playing Card Company on Bicycle Premium Stock with Air-Cushion Finish and like it's predecessor, the cards are marked.

NOC Sports are available from houseofplayingcards.com for $7. Also, remember to check out the birthday bundle Alex dropped on the site. Here are 5 things you didn't know about the NOC series:

1. The origins of the name NOC deck. This is something Alex told when someone asked him in person.
Alex told Kardify, "I have a friend in Wall Street named Michael Nochimson. He invited me to a dinner in NYC one night. I arrived early and asked him what name the reservation is under. He texted back with three capital letters: NOC. I didn’t think much of that when I read it, but when I said it out loud to the hostess, it caught my attention. It sounded cool!"

2. Months later, when Alex was brainstorming for a name for this new concept, Someone asked Alex - But what’s the design?
Alex answered, “Nothing…Only Color! N-O-C. I then remembered the NOC name from my dinner with Nochimson. I knew I had to find a name that both stood for something and stood out to enough to become a brand, so it all came together perfectly. Now when people ask me in person what does NOC stand for I respond,“Nothing…”, they laugh, then I complete it by saying “…Only Color!”

3. Over the years NOC grew into one of the most recognizable playing card brands to date. The expansion wasn’t easy.
"We had to constantly re-invent the NOCs with each edition. How do you do that with a deck, which, let’s be honest, has no design? The v1 NOCs were as plain as can be. Thick borders, no marking system, nothing special - but people loved the cards. We asked ourselves, how can we improve? For the v2, we added the suit marking system, thin borders, and the free video with routines you can perform with the marking system, and duplicate card, which was included in the deck. For $5 you got all that! We didn’t stop there though. We released 2 “summer” colors that summer by popular demand for new colors, and by Christmas, had a special Black NOC out on the market."

4. For the v3 NOCs, Alex switched to printing with the Expert Playing Card Company
"I really wanted to make the NOC deck the best it could be, and quality of Expert’s cards were amazing. We added something in the v3’s that I’ve wanted to do from the first version - a sideways tuck. This really made the brand stand out even more."

5. Alex wanted to create a bang to start NOC Signature series,
"I used this opportunity to add two things to the NOCs that people thought was not possible - White NOCs, and having them fully marked. Many people actually requested white NOCs, even though it was more of a joke than anything. I wanted to make it a reality while making them fully marked at the same time. The White NOCs sold out in record time - I don’t even have any left for myself!"

NOC Sport Green and Pink are available from houseofplayingcards.com for $7. Also, remember to check out the birthday bundle Alex dropped on the site.

Alex Pandrea Respond to House of Playing Cards' Mystery Brick Controversy

The House of Playing Cards' Mystery Brick has begun to arrive for those who managed to purchase them last month, during the holiday season. Many took to Reddit to express their disappointment about the brick's 'rare' decks. Here are a few examples: Card Card To put these comments into context, here's the description on the original product page:
LIMITED BRICKS AVAILABLE. GUARANTEED RARE DECK(S) INCLUDED. ONCE SOLD OUT THAT'S IT

You’ve NEVER seen a mystery deck deal like this one! We hunted down some of our best and most requested inventory and set aside some EXCLUSIVE decks just for you! This holiday season, we want to save you from the insane aftermarket prices of sold out decks! So we set aside limited quantities of rare decks, sold out decks, best sellers and a few surprises if you’re lucky! Savings are great, but why not save in style?

Some of accused Alex Pandrea of false advertising as the photo used on the product page does not reflect reality: Card Card Here is a snippet of Alex's response. Full Reddit thread here. Alex on HOPC:
First off, I want to start by saying that in my 10 years of producing playing cards my number 1 goal was to provide good quality cards at a great price. I've always kept my prices as low as possible so that people can afford them without feeling ripped off (like other companies and decks being released today). I don't think anyone in the community sells decks at under $10...NOC Originals being $5-$7. I fought hard to keep these prices this low over many years, despite price increases every year from USPCC, tuck cost and paper cost increases, shipping increases, warehouse and fulfillment fee increases, etc. I constantly do many deals and sales on my site where you can always have a chance to save even more - so I can say with confidence that we have thousands of people who love us for this and I am proud of what we've done.
On the Mystery Brick:
Now regarding the decks themselves. ALL decks advertised in the ad copy where used for the 200 mystery bricks. I would NEVER advertise a list like that if I weren't including them in the product. Why would I ever do that? To risk my companies 10 years of reputation on 1 product? No way! There were in total 50 mixed decks of Fontaines, DB decks, Orbits, Anyone etc, in the bricks- not including the Fort NOC deck, Pink NOC3000X2, and Survival Winter NOCs (which some might not consider rare but I guarantee they are rarer than the decks in the photos!!). These are also all sold out decks etc. I'm truly sorry if you didn't like those decks. I guess I have to start creating something other than boring old NOCs :/ WITH THAT BEING SAID - I should NOT have used the photos I used for the promotion. That is on me 100% - no excuses for that.

Alex's apology:
I am truly sorry that I did. I regret it not only because of this ordeal - but because it was a shitty thing to do now looking back, and obviously gave the wrong impression about the product. I didn't think that one through, so for that I am very sorry. We actually took the initial photos of our "rare" decks that we had way before coming up with doing a mystery brick. We didn't know exactly what we were going to use those decks for. Just sell them for the holidays? Include them as gifts? Mystery decks? At that point there was no plan. It was only after deciding to do the brick did I decide to use those particular photos to show off some dope decks. It was a very last minute thing - and we printed the brick boxes very quickly, snapped a few more photos, and just didn't think about it. It's obvious now that we should have realistic photos of examples of bricks you can possibly get.
Next steps:
Ok, so what now? Well for one, that probably was the last mystery brick I'll do haha :)) - I know, good riddance. Second, if I ever do similar bundles or different types of product I will make sure to be 100% transparent with all promotional material - AKA don't scam people I guess. Lastly, if you still feel like your brick was a "rip-off" and you got decks below the value you paid then I would agree you deserve a refund. It's the right thing to do. This is why I am going to open up my private shop email for those of who want to reach out to me personally about this. The address is : alexpandreashop AT gmail. You will be speaking DIRECTLY with me so you can let me know about your dissatisfaction.
Very well written response. A few Reddit users have started receiving their refunds: Card

News: The Story Behind Alex Pandrea's X-Deck

Ok... where do I begin with this one? The X-Deck is an Uber-Limited deck with only 250 decks in circulation and is the third deck released following the Bicycle Inspire Red and the NOC Outs Black Edition. Not much is known about this deck when it was released as part of the Blue Crown holiday giveaway. So we asked Alex Pandrea, founder of the Blue Crown about the design and the significance of the 3 X's.
This deck was designed to celebrate my 30th birthday. X is 10, and 3 X's is 30 - DUH lol... ALSO I was born on October 10th (10/10).... and at 10:00 ... so that's another 3 10's. You can see how all this comes together - enough said haha..!
The tentative name given is the X-Deck. Alex continued,
I am familiar of another x deck on the market so I might change the name not to have this confused with other "deck"... if you can even call it that.
This limited edition deck is given free when you spend $100 on the Blue Crown's 2017 holiday event promotion. Head to theBlueCrown.com and grab a bargain, particularly the EXCLUSIVE NOC 9 Pack for a cool $35!

Alex Pandrea's New Winter NOC Playing Cards

Here's another new NOC release by Alex Pandrea. After a year of teasing, the new Winter NOC series has been released and features a soothing pastel color palette and a cool back story.

From the description on the product page,
America, 1608: The North Ontario Company, or NOC, established fur trades in and around New England and Lake Ontario with the natives of the land. They traded a variety of goods such as knives, hatchets, and beads to the Indians for fur and meat. One of the most sought after recreational goods traded were playing cards, hard to find at the time. A prevalent frontiersman during this era is on the hunt for a certain rare and particular item. This is where our story begins...

Similar to previous NOC releases, the deck features a minimal back design with thin borders and standard face cards designed for magicians who prefer standard faces as they are familiar and easily recognizable by the audience.

Winter NOCs are available in 2 regular edition colors (Glacier Ice and Lavender Dusk), and 1 LIMITED edition (Survival Green).

Printed by The United States Playing Cards Company on Bicycle Premium Stock with Air-Cushion Finish. Available now from houseofplayingcards.com. Check out the AWESOME teaser trailer below.
