First Look: Triple Vision Playing Cards by One Widow Playing Cards

The Triple Vision is a custom deck of playing cards to be launched on Kickstarter. It’s design was inspired by classic 3D comics and comes with a set of old school 3D anaglyphic glasses (the ones with red and blue lenses). According to Jared from One Widow Playing Cards,
We’d been talking about creating a new deck of cards for a while now and the first thing that came to mind was ‘let’s make it 3D’. Memories of old 3D comics and cereal box promotions all came pouring in at once – the red and blue paper glasses, that classic comic book illustration style. We wanted to make a deck the was fun and unique.

To ensure that the One Widow team can achieve their goal, they started researching 3D anaglyphic illustrations – past and present.
We stumbled upon a recent 3D comic ‘MADMAN In Your Face 3D Special’. This was a great find for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it hit that sweet spot of bringing our childhood memories of 3D into the present. The illustrations in it tipped the hat to that old school look we had grown up coming to love.

While the designs work well with the 3D glasses it was important for the designer to make them interesting and easy on the eye with and without the glasses. Jared continued,
After many prototypes this lead us to a more subtle 3D effect that looks great for cardistry, magic and playing games. We really think the end result is something unique and makes a great deck of cards.

The deck will be printed by the United States Playing Card company, and there will be a number of additional items/add-ons including T-Shirts, Posters, 3D glasses and more. Also, there will be a second alternative design that will be unlocked once the project hit their set stretched goals. As a pair, the decks will really complement each other and the theme.

First Look: Never Forgotten by Robert Wright

This is a very special First Look for many reasons, one because the creator is a friend and two the inspiration behind the deck is heartwarming and personal.

Never Forgotten is being revealed at the 52 Plus Joker Convention in Orlando just about now and we are honored to have had the opportunity to bring it to those who couldn't attend. You won't find Never Forgotten launching on Kickstarter, the deck was self-funded and is already produced. The project also consists of a matching coin that is just as beautiful and intricate as the deck itself.

I tried to think of how to describe the inspiration and concept behind the deck, but the more I read what Robert sent to me, the more I understood that he described it perfectly.

I've wanted to produce a deck since I started collecting cards a few years ago. In fact I started collecting cards when I was doing research for a deck that I would still like to produce at some point. After my Mom past away, in May of last year, my attention turned towards doing a deck to pay tribute to her. There is so many things out in the market about hope, survivor and the cure for cancer. Unfortunately too many are lost. I wanted this project to be about remembering the ones we've lost.
I started bouncing ideas off of Bill Kalush and Randy Butterfield at last years 52+Joker convention. The deck truly was a collaboration between Randy and myself. He and I bounced ideas back and fourth over several emails and phone calls. I wanted it to be beautiful and classy. I think we achieved it.  The blue sapphire on the tuck, backs, and spade/club suits are my mothers birthstone. The symbolism of the ribbon becoming the butterfly. The lavender ribbon on the Tuck, back and AOS is for all cancers. The different cancer ribbon colors represented in the court cards. Plum is the color that honors caregivers represented by the angels.
This project honors my mom, but was also made possible because of her. and because of her I've been able to realize one of my dreams.

This deck and it's story will strike a cord with people across the board, and is an amazing reminder of Life and Love.

Never Forgotten was printed by the Expert Playing Card Co and designed in collaboration with Randy Butterfield (Draconian). 2000 decks were printed, with 1800 being released for sale. Single decks will be $10.00 plus Shipping. They will be available to the public on Monday October 12th, 2015 at the Never Forgotten Storenvy Shop.

NOTE: The 1st 25 Bricks sold will receive a FREE Never Forgotten Silver Coin

You'll also find Uncut Sheets, limited to 50 and a beautiful 2" Silver Coin with a color inlay to match the deck, Only 100 Coins were produced, with only 80 being released for sale.

Robert has also built the Never Forgotten Project Facebook page where people can share their stories, pictures and memories of their loved ones, present and lost.

This is an amazing project to get behind, and once again, I want to thank Robert for including me and Kardify in part of the journey.

First Look: GROTESK MACABRE Playing Cards by Half Moon Playing Cards

[Update] GROTESK MACABRE Playing Cards are now LIVE on Kickstarter!

From the mind of Lotrek comes GROTESK MACABRE, a unique deck of playing cards featuring death and darkness combined with the elegance of the Baroque and Gothic style art. Following the success of the past two years, Lotrek returns for his seventh solo crowdfunded project. This time darker and edgier than his previous decks. We asked Lotrek about the inspiration behind the GROTESK MACABRE playing cards,
Although a joyful and positive person myself, I had always been attracted to dark themed artwork. I find fascinating how artists throughout the centuries have imagined the world of the dead and how they dealt with the greatest fear of mankind. Well, the second greatest after the dentist... What I don't like is the very violent, full of intestines blood and poured out eyes representations of the dead. So, it was a challenge for me to do a deck that will combine this theme with the heavy elegance of baroque and the pointy, flamboyant Gothic art. I wanted to create an unsettling feeling without being vulgar or gross. Grotesque art was the perfect vehicle for me.

The deck was created on the back of the successful UC2014 deck. According to Lotrek,
Taking my UC2014 annual deck as a starting point, I tried to create my own vision of the Underworld. The ideas for the courts came very fast, almost subconsciously, possibly because of the huge difficulties I had to face with Venexiana Dark and ICONS imperial production, which turned the last 6 months into a constant and growing nightmare for me.

The Kickstarter campaign will be kept simple with one or two add-ons. There will be two editions available: the Original Edition and the Limited Edition, which is a very special one and will literally make things shake! We asked Lotrek to tell us more but here's what he had to say,
I cannot reveal more about it now, I haven't much advertised it in forums and people don't know what's coming upon them yet! It will be fun to watch during the KS campaign.

#kardtalk: What do you think of the Joker and the Thief Playing Cards?

Social networks such as Twitter and Instagram provides a platform for breaking news and instant reactions. Card aficionados are often opinionated and rarely pass up an opportunity to show off their card skills when new releases hits the timeline. Social networks are fast-moving and there are good amount of posts that don't get the recognition they deserve.

To change that, we've rounded up some of the best Tweets and Instagram posts from the past week on the latest releases. For this week we have the #jokeradnthethiefplayingcards from @jamesmilaras and @reubennutt. Scroll through, enjoy the images and give a follow to anyone you think deserves it.
