News: Hanson Chien Production Co. Are Releasing Pearl Playing Cards Sunrise and Sunset Edition

Inspired by the beauty of nature, Pearl Playing Cards is a set of custom decks designed by Toomas Pintson and produced by Hanson Chien Production Co. The decks are designed from the ground up and feature a unique and very colourful hand painted back design and custom court cards that complement the overall design of the decks.

The Pearl deck was originally launched on Indiegogo back in 2015. Hanson told Kardify,

I saw Toomas launch the project on Indiegogo, but unfortunately, the project was not successful. I think this was due to the lack of marketing and promotion.

Similar to Omar Renfro's Red Stripe deck, Hanson bought over the copyright and repackaged their project. According to Hanson,

My original intention is to let talented people be seen, this is more important than anything. When I contacted Toomas, he showed me almost all of his designs, and many of his designs impressed me.

The design of the Pearl deck has been updated. Hanson continued,

There was something missing with the Pearl deck on Indiegogo. I provided him with a lot of my ideas and suggestions. In the end, we drastically changed the design and kept the title and beautiful back design.

There will be two editions on offer: Pearl Sunrise and Pearl Sunset. Sunrise has a lighter, more vibrant tone than the Sunset Edition. Both editions are fully customized from the Ace of Spades, Jokers to the Courts with color palettes to match the deck.

From Hanson Chien Production Co., the White Chicken Nugget Playing Cards is a hilarious rendition of the legendary 70s Jerry's Nugget playing cards. Hanson Chien and his team spent over a year devoted to recreating a deck of cards that resembles the Jerry's Nugget as closely as possible.

From the nearly identical Ace of Spades and Joker to the crooked tax stamp and red security tear-strip, Chicken Nugget Playing Cards is as close match to the original as you can get. There's a twist to Hanson's version, the court cards feature a collection of junk-food-junkies devouring fast foods!

Cardistry: Frostbite Playing Cards Launching On Kickstarter December 25

The Cardistry Hipster is launching Frostbite Playing Cards on Kickstarter. The eye-catching deck pairs a chill geometric abstract back design with custom minimalist faces.

What started out two years ago as a one-way back design has transformed into a striking two-way design perfect for Cardistry and magic. Frostbite features custom striped pips, geometric courts, and a cool blue & white backs with triangular shapes and a simplified compass rose design.

We managed to catch-up with Sam Wheeler, founder of the Cardistry Hipster to chat about the inspiration behind Frostbite Playing Cards, the design evolution of the deck, and his collaboration with Hanson Chien.

Tell us a little about yourself and the Cardistry Hipster?
My name is Sam Wheeler I am a 20-year-old Cardist from Philadelphia, PA in the USA. I have been practicing the art of Cardistry for about 2 years or so. I initially started “The Cardistry Hipster” when the card community began to take a nasty turn into less assisting and supporting others, and more degrading beginners and their creativity. I wanted to create a platform where I could post my content while influencing others to create and further the art aspect of Cardistry. The Cardistry Hipster is now a cardistry-lifestyle branded website where I post free and premium tutorials, along with blog posts that provide tips when filming, editing, and creating Cardistry videos.

What motivated you to create your own deck of cards?
I tried creating a deck of cards before but ran into trouble when my designer decided to use a logo from a company. After that awesome experience, I decided to crack down and create a design that was unique and would actually further accentuate flourishes. The initial design was a one-way design, but after receiving various complaints I decided to reach out to Matthew Noel (@PlayingCardPictures) to help me create a two-way design from my initial draft. The minimalist card faces originating from my Simplicity deck, except they are now blue and the royals feature the same abstract geometric pattern within their bodies. The abstract back design contrasts perfectly with the simplistic faces, resulting in an elegant frosty view while handling the cards!

What is your inspiration behind the Frostbite Playing Cards? How did you come up with the idea?
I came up with the initial prototype during the winter of 2014, so, of course, the color scheme would be fitting towards the season. I believe I was inspired to create the geometric poly-shards from trying to find myself a new screensaver on my iPhone. I came across a more basic, geometric design and thought it would be sweet on a deck of cards if it were more abstract and had an element to further elevate flourishes.

How did you end up collaborating with Hanson Chien and Matthew Noel for the deck?
Matthew showed interest in the initial one-way design and reached out to me, offering to take pictures of the deck if I ever needed it! After seeing his terrific graphic work I decided he would be the best for the job!

Hanson and I ended up collaborating thanks to Sergio Rocca. Sergio has been my card-friend for some time now and we both agreed a while back to assist one another with each of our own decks. Odyssey Playing Cards were just in the developing stages at the time, I actually told him he should have custom faces with the cards as he was planning on going with standard faces! In the end, Sergio hustled more than me and was able to successfully get his deck funded and I contacted him with how I can get in contact with Hanson. Sergio replied, telling me to message and add Hanson on Facebook, and the rest is history.

Talk to us a bit about going from concept to the final version. How did you get to this finished product? How did you get feedback?
The initial concept was received fairly well on Instagram. Most individuals liked the overall design and feel of the deck, they just wanted a two-way version. After publishing the final back design online, almost everyone that came across the deck loved it and I am happy for listening to the criticism as we wouldn’t be where we are today.

With so many playing card projects competing for funding, why should potential backers choose your deck?
Honestly, I’m not here to demand anyone to back our cards over anyone else’s’. It really comes down to individual tastes and desires. This deck will be limited and will most-likely never be re-printed again. So many decks today profit off of a simple color change, we won’t just be using the paint bucket tool in the future if we decide to print another deck. At the end of the day, Frostbite Playing Cards are unique as they feature an elegant abstract back design with simple minimalist faces. They are 100% custom, and 100% designed for Cardistry but look wonderful for card magic as well. They will handle great, looking great while doing so. We thank anyone and everyone for their support and interest!

Finally, what are your favorite playing cards?
My favorite playing cards are old Stud Playing Cards. They handle amazingly and look great while doing so!

Cardistry: 3 Questions with Mike Aghabekian of Kameleon Playing Cards

Inspired by the Ambilobe Chameleon from Madagascar and the beauty and chaos of nature, Kameleon Playing Cards is an intriguing deck from Cardistry Collective. Mike Aghabekian (@cardistrycollective) from Long Island, NY, founded Cardistry Collective two years ago when he came across an amazing video of The Virts and he was hooked. Also, there is the community aspect of the art- according to Mike, it is honestly the best group of people; everyone is so close and he has made so many true friends that helped him with what he is trying to do and achieve. Hence the word 'Collective' in Cardistry Collective -it’s all about the community.

Earlier this week, we sat down with Mike and had a quick chat about the inspiration behind Kameleon Playing Cards, Cardistry-con, the cardistry community on social media and his favorite flourish and decks.

What is your inspiration behind the Kameleon Playing Cards? How did you guys come up with the idea?
Cardistry Collective is the community, but the Kameleon Playing Cards design was created by John Morell and I. John is a good friend of mine; he is a graphic designer, music producer, and an overall artistic person, so when I knew I wanted to design a deck of playing cards I naturally went to him for help. I’ve always been a big animal lover (reptiles especially) and I’ve owned a couple of chameleons in the past. When John and I first sat down to talk about the design we were inspired by nature to create something beautiful and chaotic, but also in the realm of geometric design so that people in the community could relate. Over the course of a few months, Kameleon Playing Cards was created.

We first noticed Kameleon Playing Cards on Instagram during Cardistry-Con. What do you think of the cardistry community in terms of the feedback and support that you’ve been getting so far on the social media platform?
First off, Cardistry-Con is amazing! If it wasn't for Dan and Dave Buck, and Art of Play this community wouldn’t exist, and for that we are grateful. We’ve had a lot of support from local and international cardist because of Cardistry-Con, and the strong friendships we made there and through social media. The community on instagram is so active and very approachable. Once we knew we were going to release a deck we decided to print 48 prototypes to give out at the Con and we got some great feedback and footage of all these amazing people for our promotion video.

When we launched the Kickstarter and started receiving all the pictures, videos, and repost we were so excited to see people using our deck -this community is truly fascinating. Cardist from around the world have volunteered to make tutorials that we will be giving out through our Kickstarter. We truly appreciate all the support and feedback the community has given us; we wouldn't be able to do this without you guys!

Finally, what are your favorite flourish and playing card decks?
There are many flourishes that we truly love, but some of the most inspirational flourishes come from Jaspas, The New Deck Order and The School of Cardistry. The School of Cardistry has been the best place for beginners to learn the art of cardistry and that's where we learned our first flourish. We naturally love every deck design that comes from them but our favorite has to be the Jaspas Deck Primeval edition -the colors are so vibrant they work perfectly with each other, and the stock and finish feel so satisfying -it's truly a Cardistry deck.

A designer I've always loved is Toomas Pintson of Gemini Decks. My favorite design is the new 3rd edition featuring the royal blue and neon pink colorway. Some of our other favorite playing cards come from The Hanson Chien Production Co. Hanson has been doing some really great things for the Cardistry community with premium quality decks like Odyssey, Frostbite, Pearl, and Chicken Nugget playing cards. That’s the main reason why we decided to print our deck with Hanson Chien and he's been a big help along the way.

Cardistry: 3 Questions with Nejc Sušec of the Shodou Deck

Crafted specifically for cardistry, the Shodou deck is the brainchild of Nejc Sušec currently seeking funds on Kickstarter. Nejc is from Slovenia, a small country in Europe where he studied Japanese, where he incorporated the calligraphy to the Shodou deck.

Nejc was introduced to cardistry about 12 years ago, around the time of Decknique. Nejc told Kardify,

At the time I was 12 years old and I didn't understand the value of cardistry yet. I though of it as cool tricks to show at card games, so I didn't stick with it. Then about year and a half ago I went through my youtube subscriptions and found so many amazing cardistry videos, which made me pick up my cards again and I haven't put them down ever since. It has come to the point, that I feel uncomfortable if I don't have a deck of cards with me. :)

Cardistry became a passion for Nejc and changed his life. Nejc explained,

On a more serious note, I am not a very sociable person (not the best characteristic for social media, I know) and cardistry has changed that drastically. Talking about it and sharing ideas enabled me to make new friends and I'm truly grateful I found my passion in such a cool thing as cardistry!

Earlier this week, we had a chat with Nejc about the inspiration behind Shodou playing cards, the community, and his favorite flourish and deck.

1. What is your inspiration behind the Shodou Playing Cards? How did you come up with the idea?
At first, the cards were something I made for myself. I was planning to buy new cards and in the end decided to make a custom deck just for myself. With my love for Japanese language and culture in general, I didn't have to think long about what I wanted. Later on, I saw the Isometrics V2 by Kenneth Aidan Foo and I thought the face borders are the best idea I have seen in a while, so I immediately knew I wanted to incorporate that in some way into my cards as well. After that it was just a matter of working out the details, which is what takes up most of the time.



2. How did you end up collaborating with Hanson Chien and what do you think of the support that you’ve been getting so far on the social media?
It is truly humbling when someone expresses interest in an idea you made out of passion, so when people showed interest in my cards, I felt I needed to repay that support. So I decided to put in the work and time to make the deck available to all of those people. I reached out to the card printing companies and in the end decided to work together with Hanson Chien Production Co. There are many USPCC decks out there, so I wanted to try something different. Also since the characters used on the deck are also from Chinese culture, I had the opportunity to get great advice from them. I am definitely happy with the decision I made.

3. Finally, what are your favorite flourish and playing card decks?
I really like fans, but with the amount of talented and creative cardists out there, I probably have a new favorite flourish every week or so. Most recently that has been Ebb by Noel Heath, and Moyses by Edgar Isaac has been a favorite of mine for a while now. Basically, if there is a fan or spread involved, you can sign me up!

Since I'm not an avid collector, I don't own that many decks, but I really like a deck, that has a story behind it, like the Playing Arts. Art of Play also has many such decks. Among cardistry decks I like the Virts (especially FW17), Isometrics by Kenneth and the School of Cardistry decks. I am also very excited for the upcoming Ventus by Lotus in Hand.

Kickstarter: 3 Questions with Carbon Creations Card Company

Oink Oink playing cards is the first deck designed by the Carbon Creations Card Company team. The team wanted to create a fun and simple deck of cards and decided on a simplistic but rather cute and funny pig design in eye-catching pink.

Carbon Creations Card Company (CCCC) consists of two people, Daniel Martensson who is a cardist, and magician/cardist Curtis Lee. They both share a passion and love for playing cards and as cardists and magician, they both feel that a deck is an everyday carry and an essential for performance.

With Oink Oink, the team wanted to create an eye-catching deck with minimalist design. Hence, contrasting light/dark pink colorway and the centre design element on the card back makes displays, spins and isolations look exceptionally well! The face cards are pretty much standard with updated color palette to match the theme. This is suitable for the magician who wants to maintain familiarity when performing.

We had a chat with the CCCC team about the inspiration behind Oink Oink Playing Cards, support from the community and his favorite flourish and cardistry deck.

What is your inspiration behind the Oink Oink Playing Cards? How did you come up with the idea? How did you end up collaborating with Hanson Chien Production Co.?
Curtis: It was actually Daniel who came up with the idea. He was eating a protein bar and the wrapper happened to be pink. And guess what has protein and is pink? Pigs! As for our choice of printing with Hanson Chien, they produce some of the cheapest and best feeling decks ever. They also have a fulfillment service of their own, so that cuts down on the costs of our Kickstarter a bit.

We first noticed Oink Oink Playing Cards on Instagram. What do you think of the community in terms of the feedback and support that you’ve been getting so far?
Curtis: We think that the community has been very supportive so far. They've been willing to take pictures, do renders and share our posts without hesitation.

Finally, what are your favorite flourish and/or playing card decks?
Daniel: My favorite flourish to perform Mantra and Phaesed, while my favorite flourish to watch is the Turbo Ring by Noel Heath and Mocking God. My favorite deck has to either be the Jaspas deck Primeval edition or the Oink Oink playing cards, now available on Kickstarter.

Curtis: My favorite flourish would happen to be Golden Eagle Snatches Kid, it's a relatively simple flourish, but it still looks so good. My favorite deck? Oof, that's a hard question, I like a lot of decks, but for now, the Hanamis by Hunkydory and Vice by Occupied x Takyon.

Card Radar: Omar Renfro's Red Stripe Playing Cards Are Here!

Created by magician and cardist Omar Renfro and produced by Hanson Chien Production Company, the Red Stripe Playing Cards are inspired by stained glass, cardistry, modern art, cubism, and architecture. The design comes from the concept of wanting a bold solid stripe in the middle to accent the dynamic color palette of the card back.

The deck is fully customized from the geometric back design to the custom arrangement of the spot cards, right down to the custom court cards and jokers. Even the tuck interior is customized.

The unique court cards are Omar's abstract interpretations of each "classic" bicycle court card. The body of the court cards feature an original abstract line composition while the faces of each card were executed using a continuous line and cubism style to complete the design.

The Legend Continues With The New Vintage Chicken Nugget

Hanson Chien is back with another rendition of the legendary Jerry's Nugget playing cards. Hanson and his team recreated a deck of cards that resembles the little-known rare Vintage Jerry's Nugget as closely as possible.

According to Hanson,

Years ago, I acquired the Vintage Jerry's Nugget produced by the renowned playing cards company ARRCO - from collectors River and Aiji. I was skeptical at first, so I contacted Lee Asher, Jerry's Nugget expert, to conduct joint research. After detailed research, we concluded that in terms of its art and design details, this deck is identical to the chips and merchandise for Jerry's Nugget Casino when it opened in 1964, meaning that this is a genuine deck!

To perfectly replicate the design and quality of the Vintage Jerry's Nugget, Hanson spent 3 years developing a lighter and thinner paper stock. Also, optimize the coating formula for the deck to rectify the problem of fading on the first-generation red Chicken Nugget Playing Cards. In addition, he researched the design style of the 1964 deck to remaster every detail of the Vintage Jerry's Nugget.

The Chicken Nugget is a hilarious homage to the classic deck. From the 1964 ARRCO Ace of Spades and Joker to the tax stamp and red security tear-strip, Vintage Chicken Nugget Playing Cards is as close match to the original as you can get. Like the previous Chicken Nugget release, the court cards feature a collection of junk-food-junkies devouring fast foods!

Cardistry: 3 Questions with Nicholas Lee of Rose Playing Cards

The Rose deck was conceptualized by two friends, Nicholas Lee and Sean Wu from Taiwan. Like a lot of people, they started off with magic before going to cardistry, almost 2 years ago. When they created the Rose Team, the idea was not to create a brand but to create something that would provide identity and a sense of professionalism, motivation to push their creativity forward.

Earlier this week, we had a chat with Nicholas on the inspiration behind the Rose deck, support from the community and his favorite flourish and cardistry decks.

What is your inspiration behind the Rose Playing Cards? How did you come up with the idea?
We were mostly inspired by Chris Ramsay's Carpe Noctem deck. We both wanted something more from the design, something richer and more compelling, instead of having just a black background, and thus, the Rose Deck came into our minds. To us, it combines both the elegance and radiance of a rose coupled with the interesting shapes of geometric designs, shining brilliance even when the deck is not being shuffled.

We first noticed the deck on Instagram. What do you think of the community in terms of the feedback and support that you’ve been getting so far?
The feedback and support from the community have been great. Hitting 50% on our project within 2 days?! INSANE! Also, I personally feel like the cardistry community is one of the few online communities that are still for the most part non-toxic and filled with friendly and greatly helpful people, and I'm grateful for that.

Finally, what are your favorite flourish and playing card decks?
My all-time favorite flourish is probably Bullet by Andrei Jikh, while my favorite deck (design wise) would be Monarchs by Theory11. I really enjoy decks that incorporate intricate yet not incredibly overwhelming designs, as it provides the eye with something to search.

3 Questions with Marc Ventosa of Stellar Playing Cards

Crafted specifically for cardistry, Stellar Playing Cards is a minimalistic space-themed deck designed by Marc Ventosa recently launched on Kickstarter. The deck will be the first product from Cardinates. The essence behind the Cardinates brand name is coordination, cards, and coordinates. Marc told Kardify,

Graphic Design is actually just a hobby but that hasn't ever been an obstacle, but a challenge. The creation of the brand Cardinates has allowed me interconnecting with other people while collaborating with them.

Marc has always expressed himself through art on simple pieces of paper. We sat down with Marc for a quick Q&A prior to the launch of the Kickstarter project.

What is your inspiration behind the Stellar Playing Cards? How did you come up with the idea? How did you end up collaborating with Hanson Chien Production Co.?
Well, that's a really difficult question to answer. I think you can't hold the word of design in your hand because it's based in a whole process where inspiration acts on each step of the process. Around the visible design, I was influenced by minimalist space posters and artworks from other great artists. Then I thought of making a minimal design based on my space creativity as I always liked that theme.

The first sketch to the final color and design took about eight months. Sometime in between, HCPC comes to action. I've been in touch with Hanson Chien months before starting the project. He liked the design and decided to invest in the project, which I truly appreciated.

We first noticed Stellar Playing Cards on Instagram (@cardinates). What do you think of the cardistry community in terms of the feedback and support that you’ve been getting so far?
The cardistry community has been a great supporter. The same way they deserve quality content, you have to be consistent with the post frequency and also have to be good at tracking new release, I have a good feeling about the likings of the community.

As a creator, I've been always committed to doing my best to connect with my audience and their needs. On the other hand, Instagram is an amazing way to help spread the word and to promote your product for a future Kickstarter release.

Finally, what are your favorite flourish and playing card decks?
There are lots and lots of flourishes so it's hard to decide, even making a top three. I would say Anaconda, Funnel, Squall, and Highway. I love the motions and dynamics of all four flourishes. On playing cards, I feel really inspired by the legendary Absolut Vodka decks. Their elegant but electrifying design makes them stunning. Also, I like the feel of casino-style decks such as Wynn. It's absolutely interesting to see the growth of custom card designs, I truly hope that we will be able to discover new and completely mindblowing concepts; digital art has unimaginable coordinates and paths.

Another Cardistry-Con has come and gone, and this year's event was the biggest global cardistry event in history. Attendance grew by 100% compared to the previous year in Berlin. A strong crowd of more than 300 cardists attended cardistry-con in downtown Los Angeles within the Arts District at The Springs. In addition, new cardistry decks were introduced over the Con weekend.
