7 Questions with Joshua Jay about the Dapper Deck by Vanishing Inc

The Dapper Deck is a beautiful deck of playing cards conceptualized by Vanishing Inc. Magic, one of the largest magic companies in the world. The idea was to create the most fashion-forward, subtle, and sophisticated "look" for a deck of cards yet devised. The result is the Dapper Deck, which is an eye-catching deck of cards crafted from the finest stock and finish.

Available in two base colors, navy blue and Jerry's Nugget Orange, the Dapper Deck is fully custom and adorned with beautiful details. The details are in pastel shades of green, yellow, red, and grey, and each back design is designed to bring out the colors of your wardrobe. For each face card, there will be a random pip that matches the back design, accentuating the uniqueness of this deck. The Ace and the Jokers are very stylized and beautiful, consistent with the theme of the deck.

We had the opportunity to chat with Joshua Jay, co-founder of Vanishing Inc about the Dapper Deck, it's inspiration & design process and Vanishing Inc's next project.

For those of us who don’t know, tell us a little about Vanishing Inc?
Vanishing Inc started because two best friends got together six years ago to pursue a dream of producing their original material. Andi Gladwin and I were both so passionate about magic, and we wanted to create what we felt would be the ultimate shop. So, we did. Six years later, we are one of the largest and most diverse brands in the world. It's been an amazing ride.

This is your first playing card project on Kickstarter. Why Kickstarter?
Because this is where the best decks are unveiled. We really feel we have created a special deck, and we wanted to unveil it to an audience that would be excited.

Tell us a little about the background and the inspiration behind the Dapper Deck?
I think two things are particularly notable about the Dapper Deck. The first is that it's a BRAND that is not only cards, but also an attractive skinny tie, a pocket square, and an AMAZING wooden-polished box. It's a set, and it looks GORGEOUS on a shelf, and for magicians or card players who use the dapper deck, their entire ensemble will be subtly connected. The other thing that's really special about the deck is how subtle and restrained the design looks. Particularly on the faces (Aces and number cards), the design is ever-so-slightly present, in a cool way.

Walk us through the process you took to design this unique deck. How did you approach this project and get to this finished product?
We consulted two experts from the fashion industry. One works in color palettes and helped us determine the color scheme for both colors of the deck. Then, we worked with a fashion designer to make sure the materials used in the pocket square and tie were of high quality, and that the accessories were considered at the cusp of fashion.

From the project page, what are a few of your favorite reward levels and why?
You have to go with deluxe box. Whatever level you do, make sure it at least includes the Dapper Deck Deluxe box. Please, please take a chance. The decks are great--raised printing on the boxes, amazing finish, and slick design, but frankly it's the entire package and presentation of the deluxe box that sets this project apart.

What’s next for Vanishing Inc? Can we expect to see more card designs in the future from you guys?
Yes. We have already completed the next project. It will again come with a gorgeous box (same size and shape but different design). The next series will have FIVE decks, and I am pleased to announce here for the first time the title of the series. World Tour Decks. For the details, you'll just have to wait until we post on Kickstarter in April.

Can't wait to find out more! Finally, what are your favorite playing card decks?
Theory11 and the Buck Twins both do beautiful decks, but remember that we're magicians first, and card lovers second. So our passion is with decks that have a simplicity and elegance.

Thank you for your time Joshua and all the best! At the time of writing, the project is only 60% funded with 21 days to go. If want to support the Dapper Deck, you can find it on Kickstarter here.

The Dapper Deck will be available in two colors: Navy and Orange. Pledge starts from $8 and these beautifully crafted decks will be printed by EPCC.

Don't forget to check out the Dapper Deck Deluxe Package, which includes the Dapper decks along with a matching silk tie and a 1000 thread count pocket square. All neatly packaged in a hand-painted wooden lacquer box complete with lock, practice mirror, and Dapper Deck insignia.

Each package comes with a numbered, signed certificate by both creators Joshua Jay and Andi Gladwin. Strictly limited to 400 units.

Review: The Discoverie Deck (Pre-Release)

The Discoverie Deck is a collaboration between Big Blind Media and Vanishing Inc and pays homage to Reginald Scot's "Discoverie of Witchcraft". The design is unlike any either company has ever released and will only be released in limited quantities. The deck has been somewhat of a mystery up until now when only a select few have been given any information regarding the deck. Currently on pre-order for a July 19th release by select retailers including JP Playing Cards in the UK, The Discoverie Deck is much more than a regular deck of cards. The Discoverie Deck is history wrapped in 56 custom designed playing cards. Here is the story of the deck as told by Big Blind Media and Vanishing Inc:

In 1584, magic was changed forever by one man and one book Reginald Scot published the Discoverie of Witchcraft, one of the first ever magic books written in the English language. Discoveries showed a superstitious public that magicians were not witches, but entertainers with clever effects and methods. We commemorate this historic moment in history with a deck befitting the Discoverie legacy.

The Discoverie Deck is designed in a style of a rare first edition Discoverie of Witchcraft. Intricate woodcuts from the book are featured on the faces of the cards, and the Aces are adorned with a passage from the book. Written in elegant calligraphic style of the day. The tuck case act as "covers" to protect the "pages" cards within. The Discoverie Deck is printed on premium grade USPCC Stock

Without Discoverie the world of magic would have been a very different place. It is the first and only pack of cards ever produced by vanishing inc magic, and has been printed in a very limited edition.

The specs:

Name: The Discoverie Deck
Company: Big Blind Media and Vanishing Inc.
Release Date: To be released on July 19, 2013
Stock: Bicycle
Finish: Air-cushion
Colors: Deep reds, browns, beige, burnt orange, antique colors
Face: Standard
Size: Poker

The Discoverie Deck features 56 cards including 2 Jokers and 1 gaff and a "history lesson" card.  The tuck case is quite the change from what Big Blind Media usually releases as it is designed to look like the first edition of "Discoverie of Witchcraft" book released in the 1500's. The entire tuck case looks like an almost ancient book with a leather binding and weathered pages. Although printed by USPCC, the Bicycle logo does not don this deck. In fact, the only wording on the Tuck Case is "Discoverie Deck" across the the top front and left side.

Once inside this deck, you are met with a design that takes actual images from the original "Discoverie of Witchcraft" book. The back design continues the concept of the leather bound book. It almost seems as if it is the inside of the book cover. A small downside with the back design is that it is one-way but given it's simplicity, the one-way design is not extremely noticeable and does not take away from the overall deck. More than likely a spectator will never notice the subtle differences that make this a one-way design. It is true to a book cover in that book covers are not normally two-way.

The Ace of Spades is not the keystone of the deck as it is combined with all of the other Aces to create a message taken right from the book. By downplaying the Ace of Spades, which is normally the arch of the deck, designer Sam Hayles puts emphasis on the message of all the cards combined instead of the individual cards separate. This brings the concept of a "book" into light as each card becomes a page in the book creating a much larger story.

Every card in the deck dons a background that looks like an old page in a book with burnt orange, beige and other colors to give the effect of  discolored or antiqued paper. The Jokers take images right out of the book as seen here in a later edition of Scot's classic:

The number cards feature the antiqued book paper look as well. Interestingly, the two's and four's have a Joker image as well as another book image on them. This can be used creatively for different card magic routines. This is something you do not see often or ever in standard playing cards. In fact, most custom decks do not even add this type of design to the number cards.

Up close look at the number cards' detail:

The court cards were designed with custom coloration on an antiqued paper background that overlays the royals. They still feature the Anglo-American royals that are normally on traditional playing cards. Given the the theme of this deck it would have been interesting to see more customization on the court cards with artwork depicting early magicians and other historical figures from the 1500's when the book was written. It can only be imagined that magicians in the 1500's were under a lot of scrutiny and pressure, which is extremely stressing. Although the current court cards are not far from that period's style, a more emotional looking court card dressed with items that early magicians and witch hunters used would have been a unique touch. Despite that, the colorization of the court cards provides a cohesive look and feel throughout. Because of that, the cards do not feel out of place at all and actually become more of the pages in the book that this deck is based on.

The cards handle like a standard USPCC/Bicycle deck. They are smooth but not slippery. There are no complaints on fanning, shuffling and overall handling.

Notes on the The Discoverie Deck:

• Reginald Scot died in 1599, 15 years after "Discoverie of Witchcarft" was published.

• James I ordered all copies be burnt in 1603.

• There have been later editions released including downloadable copies.

• The Discoverie Deck is limited with less than 10K printed.

• Designer Sam Hayles designs all of Big Blind Media's cards including the upcoming Karnival Elite being released on the same day.

Final Assessment: The Discoverie Deck is an extremely unique deck of playing cards that should appeal to collectors and magicians. The story behind the deck goes back hundreds of years, which can be very beneficial for those magicians that love to tell stories in their routines. Because the story is so rich in history, it can even help those that struggle to tell stories. The design of the deck isn't the most detailed or most eye popping but the sum of this decks parts makes this deck stand out among some of the super detailed and illustrated decks. This deck was meant to tell a story and to pay homage to one of the first books on magic ever written. It accomplishes both tasks and then some. The Discoverie Deck becomes the book. And that is what makes this deck such a must have.

Final Score:  9.5/10

Card Radar: The World Tour Deck Set by Vanishing Inc

What a cool concept! Released last year by Vanishing Inc, The World Tour Deck Set is a presentation "trunk" of five bespoke packs of playing cards, each highlighting a different country and culture from the turn of the last century. The World Tour Deck Set is presented in a miniature travel trunk, replete with decals from the far-off places the cards have traveled to. A compass in a gorgeous wooden housing, a number of ephemera items are also included in the carrying trunk.

According to the product description, the World Tour Deck Set is more than just a trunk with playing cards. It's a story about the Great Ezra, a turn-of-the-century magician, traveling around the globe and sending these decks back to you, each one with a note. To help immerse you in the spirit of the turn of the century, all the ephemera, from the handwritten notes written on railcar stationary, coasters to tickets, and hotel paper... are included.

The decks themselves are gorgeous, with iconography and hidden elements from the countries, culture, and time they come from. When all five decks are lined up, they create a map of the world highlighting the featured countries: France, Switzerland, Mongolia, China, and Egypt.

All decks are printed by the Expert Playing Card Company. Each deck has an extremely limited run of 1500 decks and are available separately at Vanishing Inc. The World Tour Set is available for a reasonable price of $100.

Deck View: Feather (Gold Edition) Deck

Elegant. Streamlined. Timeless.

The Feather Deck is the result of 9 months of collaborative work between Travis DeMello and the team at Vanishing Inc. Brooklyn-based DeMello specializes in anatomy drawings and selected the goldfinch feather, because of its ergonomic, symmetrical shape.

The back design may look photographic, but it is entirely hand-drawn. The pastel orange back of every card has been embossed with gold foil in the subtlest of ways. The face cards are pretty much standard with the exception of the Ace of Spades and Jokers.

The deck is packaged in an elegant deep purple tuck box starkly embossed with foil and with additional artwork by DeMello. The Feather Deck celebrates the awe-inspiring beauty of the natural world, and reminds us of the inner-beauty found in the bird's feather.

Printed by Cartamundi on crushed-stock finish available NOW from Vanishing Inc for $11.95.

Daniel Garcia's Maze Deck

Daniel Garcia has long been celebrated for his inventive approach to magic, and his newest release, the DG Maze Deck, carries that reputation forward with style. Created by Vanishing Inc. in collaboration with Garcia himself, the deck is designed from the ground up as an everyday carry that hides a remarkably clever secret.

At first glance, the card backs display a striking geometric “Maze Design”- bold, modern, and visually engaging. But built seamlessly into that pattern is a marking system that reveals both suit and value instantly to those who know where to look.

There’s no decoding, no memory work, and no straining for microscopic cues. The system is meant to be readable even from across the table, yet remains completely invisible to spectators, even under close scrutiny.

The deck also features a custom Ace of Spades along with several extras: a King of Diamonds with a yellow-and-red back, a Four of Spades with a red back, and two duplicate Jokers, useful tools for performers who rely on subtle switches and structured routines.

Printed by the United States Playing Card Company on premium crushed stock, the DG Maze Deck handles with the smooth, flexible feel magicians expect from a working deck. Available now from Vanishing Inc for $20.

This exclusive set not only lets you watch the entire show but also includes a 4-hour masterclass where Joshua Jay unveils the secrets behind the effects and provides invaluable insights into creating and performing your own magic.

This custom deck features unique jokers, an Ace of Spades, and semi-custom face cards, all designed with a touch of elegance. The mirrored card backs include a clever marking system that enhances your magic routines, making these cards as functional as they are beautiful.

Whether you’re a magician or a fan of beautifully crafted playing cards, this deck is a must-have addition to your collection. Available from Vanishing Inc.

The Crossed Keys Playing Cards From Ellusionist

The Crossed Keys are the ancient iconography for the gates of heaven. Inverted, the keys represent the gates of hell. It's this strong symbol of power that pairs perfectly with Peter Turner's mentalism work.

From Ellusionist, this exquisite deck is crafted with magicians in mind. The deck comes with an Edwardian green colorway with metallic gold inks. The intricate design and details shimmer even the dimmest of light.

With the exception of the Ace of Spades and Jokers, the face cards are pretty much standard but updated with a color palette consistent with the rest of the deck.

Also, the elegant back design with gold line accents masks an incredibly intuitive marking system for the clever magician to take advantage of.

The Crossed Keys tuck box is subtly wrapped in gold foil, so it won't distract those who aren't paying attention but will impress those who do.

Printed by Cartamundi on the popular luxury-pressed E7 stock for sustained use. Available now for $9.95 from Vanishing Inc..

Deck View: Vitreous Playing Cards

Tribute. Beautiful. Love.

Produced by R.E Handcrafted, Vitreous Playing Cards pay tribute to the breathtaking stained-glass windows of Cathedral Saint-Peter-and-Saint-Paul in Nantes, France. Named after the word “Vitreous”—meaning glass-like in appearance and properties—this deck embodies elegance and craftsmanship.

Featuring a custom back design, Ace of Spades, and Jokers. The Jokers depict angels, one holding a book, the other holding the 10 of Spades. With a traditional cut, the cards handle beautifully for table faros and riffle shuffles, making them ideal for magicians, cardists, and gamblers alike.

Beyond design, Vitreous is a deeply personal project. Created by Jeremy Griffith in memory of his father, the deck reflects love, loss, and legacy. His father’s face appears on the King of Hearts, holding a wrench instead of a sword, symbolizing his role as a builder, not a destroyer. The phrase beneath the Spade—"Cui Servire Est Regnare"—translates to "Who Serves is Who Rules," a reflection of his father’s selfless strength.

Printed on Classic Stock by Expert Playing Card Company. Available for $10 on Vanishing Inc Magic.

NOC's Beach Bar Playing Cards

Alex Pandrea continues to mix things up with the colorful NOC's Beach Bar playing cards. The deck is a beach-inspired deck that is looking to bring some summer vibes into your home. According to the product page,

NOC's Beach Bar is the utopian place where it's always summer, where you can hear the ukulele playing in the background while holding the perfect cocktail deck in your hand.

Like the NOC Diner, the new addition to the series sees the card backs at its most vibrant and enticing. Rather than conform to the usual static colors of the usual NOCs, the deck is fully highlighted in a beautiful gradient summer colorway.

Everything from the tuck box and the card backs are designed with a bright color pallet throughout. The face card is pretty much standard but comes with an exclusive custom Ace of Spades and Joker.

Printed by the United States Playing Cards Company on thin crushed stock. Available now Vanishing Inc Magic for $12.
