Kickstarter: Stanbur Royal Playing Cards by SixtyFourPlayingCards

Michele Spatola started a new playing cards project through SixtyFourPlayingCards on Kickstarter and it is titles Stanbur Royal Playing Cards. Stanbur Royal Playing Cards is a deck that features women only on all the court cards... even the jokers.



If you think that looked familiar, you’re right. Michele Spatola created Antagon Royal playing cards which also featured only women.  These are the women featured as Kings. Both projects displayed 3D rendered women portraits and both projects featured them in medieval/fantasy settings. In essence, Stanbur Royal Playing Cards feels like an expansion of Anatagon Royal playing cards. One compelling reason why anybody may want to pledge for Stanbur Royal playing cards is to admire the nicely 3D rendered illustration of women in fantasy costume and also for the special add-ons.

Kickstarter: Water Margin Playing Cards by Paul Guo

There are often western literature inspired playing cards on Kickstarter and this time, a Chinese Classic became the inspiration. The project creator, Paul Guo, used one of the Four Great Novels, Water Margin or 水滸傳 as background for Water Margin Playing Cards.

There are one hundred and eight heros in the novel but not all of them are featured in the playing card project. Only fourteen characters were used in the royal court portraits and as joker cards. The art style of the royal court portraits follows the Ukiyo-e style which resembles the style used in making old Chinese playing cards which were based on characters from Water Margin novel.

Although there are no special add-ons and this project being a single edition launch, there is a still a collectable value to it. The slightly vintage style of the illustration and the porcelain style of the card back and tuck box heightens the vintage look.

Kickstarter: CHAO Playing Cards by MPC

Travel back in time to China with the latest project by Make Playing Cards (MPC), CHAO Playing Cards on Kickstarter. There are many historic and notable characters throughout China’s long and eventful history and a few of them are listed in CHAO Playing Cards. Chao is the Mandarin pronunciation for Dynasty and it is written as 朝 which is the big logo on the front of the tuck box.



There are two editions in this Kickstarter project, Porcelain Blue and Vermilion Red. The designs differ only in the color scheme with everything on the card face remaining the same for both editions.



There will be a total of 14 characters in a deck, 12 for the royal court portraits (3 for each suit) and 2 as the jokers. The four pips will each represent a dynasty in China’s history:

• Han (206BCE – 220CE), 
• Tang (618CE – 906CE), 
• Ming (1368CE – 1644CE) 
• Qing (1644CE – 1912CE).

Each character will be appearing in the style of their representative dynasty. There are much more dynasties and kingdoms in China’s history apart from the 4 mentioned above. Kickstarter: Magnum Force Playing Cards

What do Shredder, Mr T, He-Man and Cobra Commander have in common? Nothing! Except the fact they were pretty huge in the 80s and kids growing up in that decade will remember these iconic characters. This is what Forge Arts playing cards want to recreate when they launch Magnum Force playing cards on Kickstarter.

The idea for Magnum Force playing cards is fairly simple- celebrate what makes 80’s fun. Besides the characters mentioned, there are other characters cameo in the royal court cards which will stir up your memory and bring back a wave of nostalgia.

However, this isn’t a cheap attempt to appeal to your nostalgia to pledge for this project. Every single character appearing on the royal court will remind you of a character from the past. The overall look and feel of this project are rather campy. Bright colours galore and so many different colours being used but it is all done in fun with the intention to remind you of the 80s and eventually get you to own a piece of your past once again.
