Kickstarter: 5 Things You Didn't Know About Luna Moon Playing Cards by Bocopo Playing Cards Company and Kevin Yu

More than six months on the making, Luna Moon Playing Cards by Bocopo Playing Cards Co. (BPCC) and Kevin Yu of Riffle Shuffle is an eye-catching deck with a revolutionary fanned deluxe tuck case. The project was funded within 26 hours, and all of the Luna Moon Playing Card decks are now sold out! Incredible!

The deck has been inspired by the historical significance of the moon in both Western and Chinese culture- a symbol of change and repetitive cycles in life. The moon is associated with family, especially during the mid-autumn festival where mooncakes are to be eaten with a reunited family.

If you've missed out on the Luna Moon deck, BPCC and Kevin have just released the Helius Sun Playing Card on Kickstarter. The tuck of Helius Sun is just as special as Luna Moon and incorporates some complimentary details. The Maroon Red box is reminiscent of the Sun’s flaming heat. The rigid, hexagon opening represents the intensity of the Sun. The opening of the box is like sunray beaming towards us on Earth, providing the warmth and freedom that we so desperately after months of freezing cold.

Here are 5 things you didn't know about the Luna Moon Playing Cards:

1. The Idea
The idea for the unique tuck case is from peeling oranges. According to Kevin Yu,  "We wanted to mimic the different phases of the moon through the box, but there we couldn’t find the best way to do so. To our surprise, the idea hit us when we were peeling oranges during a group meeting. The peeling of the outside layer reveals the orange fruit, and we instantly began simulating the box opening with the orange peels."

2. The Color
The dark indigo color was selected because of its richness and depth, which black couldn’t deliver.
"The universe is always painted in black, but we chose to use a very dark indigo color. Black absorbs all light and it wouldn’t be able to create the perception of depth in the cards as we wanted. The indigo color also contrasts nicely with the metallic gold and together creating a rich color combination."

3. The Card Back Design
The backs are meant to represent looking beyond the Moon into the Milky Way.
"We wanted to create the cards as a separation of dimension, looking at the front side would be looking at the Moon from Earth, and the back would represent looking past the Moon into space. Instead of dotting the dark universe with stars, we chose to showcase the mesmerizing lights of the Milky Way to highlight the mysteries that the universe holds."

4. The Number 9
There are 9 moons when the case is fully open because the number 9 is strongly associated with the Chinese Dragon. "The importance of the number 9 is often overlooked even in Chinese culture. Ancient lore says that the Chinese Dragon had 9 children, and these children have been displayed in various illustrations for thousands of years. Being the largest digit, the number is also used to represent any large number of variations, and especially so for multiples of 9. For example, the variations of the legendary Monkey King is always referred to as 9 x 9 instead of just 81."

5. Constructing the Tuck Box
It takes 15-20 minutes to make the boxes by hand.
"The complex procedures required to perfectly fold a box by hand takes over 20 minutes even for us. The unique craft paper guarantees that the box stays in its original form after opening and closing many times."

The Luna Moon and Helius Sun Playing Cards come in two different versions: a Classic case Edition and a Deluxe case Edition. Both editions are highly limited to 2500 units each. Pledge starts from $27 for a set on Kickstarter.

Cardistry: First Look at the Art of Cardistry Deck by Bocopo Playing Cards Co and Kevin Yu

[Update] The Art of Cardistry deck is now LIVE on Kickstarter!

Launching November 1st on Kickstarter, the Art of Cardistry deck is a collaboration between Bocopo Playing Cards Co and Kevin Yu created specifically for the mesmerizing art of card flourishing.

The deck features a contemporary design inspired by the polygon theme and is a tribute to that art, the skill and to everyone that is interested in cardistry.

On the design, Kevin told Kardify,
Every card is completely customized and redesigned after over 50 color options to find the combination that is most suitable for cardistry. We wanted to find the perfect balance between flashiness and attention, and after our own tests this is it.

Two edition will be made available, the Blue edition deck and the limited Red edition. What stands out about this Kickstarter project is its affordable price. The pledge for the Blue edition will be as low as $5.

 Kevin explained,
We know the price of playing cards has increased a lot during the past few years and we hate it too. We care deeply about the cardistry and magic community and our goal for this deck is to provide the community with a premium yet affordable option. We hope this deck will encourage and enable those who are interested in cardistry to join the community and start practicing.
[Update] The Art of Cardistry deck is now LIVE on Kickstarter!

Both decks will be printed by the United States Playing Card Co. with Air Cushion Finish. The Art of Cardistry deck will be launching on November 1st on Kickstarter.

Trident Playing Cards Smashes Funding Goal On Kickstarter

WOW! Trident Playing Cards by Kevin Yu has just reached hit over 3400% of its funding goal of $6,000. The incredible looking deck features the same eye-catching tuck concept of the classic Luna Moon series. However, the Trident tuck box has been enhanced in terms of structure and craftsmanship. According to Kevin Yu on the Kickstarter campaign page,
We have designed a new magnetic opening and closing system and devised a self-locking system with the structure of buckles and slide rails that no longer use a band to hold the pieces together. Therefore, the card box can be kept in a perfectly unfolded state and set on the table for everyone to admire.

When the box is spread out, one will notice that each piece is lined by a stunning Foil line, which traces the weapon-shaped cutouts. However, when the tuck box is retracted, the eight parts come together to create a window through which the weapon can be seen, and the Foil lines form a stunning halo, emitting a dazzling light.

Inside, the card backs follow the overall style and color palette of the tuck box. The backs feature a mesmerizing silver and copper metallic ink with highly saturated colored lines outline the image of the Poseidon’s trident, and the light grey lines add contrast and richness to the pattern.

The face cards are equally eye-catching. Consistent with the overall color palette of the deck, the number cards are also made using a black background. The contrasting orange pattern is reinforced by subtle dark grey lines with the hearts and diamonds in orange and clubs and spades, metallic grey.

The courts are represented by legendary heroes from a different historical period, from Athena, to Alexander the Great and Hector from Homer’s epos Iliad.

A silver trident is a central element of the Ace of Spades. The long handle and the sharp tip of the trident extend upward and downward dynamically. The orange lines mimicking the light emitted from the trident cleverly come together in the shape of a spade.

The Trident and Sword Set comes with a Deluxe Edition and Classic Edition, each. The design is set on a solemn Black Foil background, with the Trident traced in bright Bronze Foil lines, and the Sword in Sky Blue Foil. These stylish deck combines an industrial look with modern technology and elements from myths and legends.

The Deluxe Edition will be manufactured by the United States Playing Card Co with Bee Casino Stock and Air-Cushion Finish. The Classic Edition will be manufactured by the Makeplayingcard (MPC) with their newest Linen Air Light M30 card stock.
