Cardistry: What is Cardistry? Watch this Short Documentary

For those of you who are into the mesmerizing art of card flourishing (cardistry), you probably have watched this short documentary numerous times by now. Directed by Erudite Pictures and produced by Dan and Dave, this documentary tells the story of how Cardistry-Con came to be and the amazing community that is pushing the limits of possibility with a simple deck of cards.

Cardistry-Con 2016 took place in Berlin, Germany on July 8, 9 and 10. About 150 cardists from all over the world gathered in an old chocolate factory to share their passion for cardistry, learn about the art, and connect with one another.

Filmed on location during this year's Cardistry-Con, the documentary begins with Zach Mueller sharing why Cardistry is important to him and followed by Dan and Dave describing what Cardistry-Con is. The video also features lots of cool shots of incredible card flourishes by attendees and interviews with cardistry personalities such as Andrei Jikh, Anna DeGuzman, Kevin Ho and more!

Kickstarter: Bitcoin Playing Cards Funded in 12 Hours

Andrei Jikh and Patrick Kun announced and launched the Bitcoin Playing Cards on Kickstarter during Cardistry-Con, Hong Kong and in just under 12 hours, the project has successfully hit its funding goal of $20k. The stunning decks are designed by Billy French. Every aspect of this deck is designed to mirror the Bitcoin currency - the value, the look, the feel, and ultimately - the story.

Two decks are on offer during the campaign, the standard Black Bitcoin deck featuring a luxurious tuck box with premium soft-touch Black dyed paper, embossed and adorned with Black and Gold Foil on the exterior and interior.

The White deck will be LIMITED and contained within an acrylic puzzle box. The puzzle is a visual analogy of Bitcoin’s BLOCKCHAIN technology where one must do “proof of work” in order to solve and mine the Bitcoin Playing Cards out from the puzzle block.

Oskar Van Deventer, a Guinness World Record holder for the largest Rubik’s cube helped design the puzzle. Hundreds of combinations can exist within the puzzle.

Both decks feature custom Ace of Spades, Jokers, and card backs. The court cards, however, are kept largely the same as standard Bicycle faces but with gold metallic ink as accents!

The deck will be printed by Legends on the brand new soft Stud Paper with the Cardistry Finish. Pledge starts at $15. Check it out on Kickstarter here!

Cardistry: 3 Questions with Nicholas Lee of Rose Playing Cards

The Rose deck was conceptualized by two friends, Nicholas Lee and Sean Wu from Taiwan. Like a lot of people, they started off with magic before going to cardistry, almost 2 years ago. When they created the Rose Team, the idea was not to create a brand but to create something that would provide identity and a sense of professionalism, motivation to push their creativity forward.

Earlier this week, we had a chat with Nicholas on the inspiration behind the Rose deck, support from the community and his favorite flourish and cardistry decks.

What is your inspiration behind the Rose Playing Cards? How did you come up with the idea?
We were mostly inspired by Chris Ramsay's Carpe Noctem deck. We both wanted something more from the design, something richer and more compelling, instead of having just a black background, and thus, the Rose Deck came into our minds. To us, it combines both the elegance and radiance of a rose coupled with the interesting shapes of geometric designs, shining brilliance even when the deck is not being shuffled.

We first noticed the deck on Instagram. What do you think of the community in terms of the feedback and support that you’ve been getting so far?
The feedback and support from the community have been great. Hitting 50% on our project within 2 days?! INSANE! Also, I personally feel like the cardistry community is one of the few online communities that are still for the most part non-toxic and filled with friendly and greatly helpful people, and I'm grateful for that.

Finally, what are your favorite flourish and playing card decks?
My all-time favorite flourish is probably Bullet by Andrei Jikh, while my favorite deck (design wise) would be Monarchs by Theory11. I really enjoy decks that incorporate intricate yet not incredibly overwhelming designs, as it provides the eye with something to search.

If you liked what you read here and would like to support the Rose deck, head to Kickstarter here! Pledge starts at $13 and the deck will be printed by Hanson Chien Productions Co on Luxury Stock and Legendary Finish.

The 12 Most Funded Kickstarter Playing Cards Campaigns Ever

The custom playing cards market has boomed over the past year, investment in crowd-funded decks have surged and new designs and concepts are pushing the boundaries of the simple constraints of one tuck x four suits x thirteen cards.

There’s no doubt that crowdfunding has had an impact on the playing cards industry. For those unfamiliar with crowdfunding, in a nutshell, is the collective effort of individuals who network and pool their money (backers) to support projects initiated by other people or companies. The pool is used as capital for products and/or services offered as rewards to backers- only if the funding goal is achieved. Each project has a variety of different pledge options (reward tiers) where larger pledges are rewarded with increasing incentives.

Kickstarter has been the most popular platform for crowdfunding playing card projects. In this "Top 12", we’ve collated 12 of the most funded playing card projects on Kickstarter to date. Black Mint, The Princess Bride and MISC Goods have dropped outside the Top12. Joining the list are Bitcoin, Parlour and Jerry's Nugget Reprint Playing Cards.
