News: 5 Things You Didn't Know About Seekers Playing Cards By Billy French

One of two new releases by Art of Play during the Black Friday weekend, Seekers Playing Cards tells the story of two parallel worlds and the ongoing struggle for victory before the light is extinguished. The deck is conceptualized and illustrated by Billy French with each card meticulously drawn with great detail. Here are 5 things you didn't know about Seekers:

1. It’s all in the Name
One of the hardest parts of designing a deck of cards is finding a good name! Billy told Kardify, “Seekers felt like a fitting title to the band of personalities that I had created for this deck, and doubled as a description for how I felt about my own work at this stage in my career. We’re all seeking greatness in some fashion - in our work, relationships, hobbies. I’m proud of this deck of cards - even if I’m still left seeking what’s next!"

2. Through the Gate
"I’ve been obsessed with fine line work and cryptic symbols for awhile now in my design work - which is why I let that shine most in the case design." The tuck case was designed to represent a gate “to the other side” with the Ace of Spades representing the light of life - which we strive to keep lit. The back is a nod to the unknown, that mysterious next step. Designed to mimic a few things - a book/tome, curtains rising and closing, and avoid opening in space. Make of it what you will!

3. Inspired by Life… and Death.
Just like Bloodlines, Billy wanted to craft a deck with unique court cards - but this time he wanted to tell a better story. "After messing with a few different thematics, I landed on two different card styles - one skeletal and one living! I then realized combination and juxtaposition of the two styles made for a great set of red / black hands, and worked forward from there."

4. A Little Birdie Told me…
Fun fact, the Bird on the King of Spade’s shoulder is brought in from my “Playing Arts” submission. The card didn’t make it into the deck, but I loved the birds so much I found a way to incorporate it into this deck. I hope it’s small details like these that people will come to appreciate about this deck of cards.

5. Collaboration with Art of Play
This is my first collaboration with Art of Play. I originally had planned on doing a second Kickstarter - a follow up to my last deck of cards, Bloodlines. However, after reaching out to Art of Play and talking with Dan Buck a bit further about my hopes for fulfillment and printing of the deck, they graciously offered to partner on the deck of cards this time around. This meant the cards could be made in time for the holidays and would be backed by one of the greatest teams in the playing card business. They did a spectacular job working with Clove St. Press to make “Seekers” a beautiful reality. I’m honored to have my deck as an official Art of Play release.

Precisely printed by The United States Playing Card Company with D&D's trademark thin stock, and a premium finish for superior handling. Packaged inside a letterpress-printed tuck case featuring gold metallic ink and white foil. Available now from Artofplay.com for $12.

Kickstarter: 7 Questions with Billy French of Bloodlines Playing Cards

Bloodlines Playing Cards is created by first time Kickstarter, Billy French. This eye-catching deck derives it's name from the tradition of playing cards - the royal families. The court cards are unique in that rather than the traditional courts, these cards are represented by the kings, queens, knights and weapons, each with their own traits and personalities. Bloodlines features 56 gorgeously illustrated deck with custom Faces, Ace, Jokers and Tuck.

We caught up with Billy to talk about his design background, the inspiration behind Bloodlines and the design evolution of the deck.

Can you tell us about yourself and what is your design background?
Sure! I studied graphic design at the Savannah College of Art and Design, graduating in 2011. My work has taken me across the globe, spanning a range of projects from massive-multiplayer games to the published documentation of Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong. I currently live and work in Durham, NC as a designer and illustrator at Viget. In my free time I like to work on projects like Bloodlines, collect records, and travel.

This is your first playing card project on Kickstarter. Why Kickstarter?
I’ve been a huge fan of Kickstarter for a long time, having backed a good deal of projects. There’s something really wonderful to me about the ability to put an idea or product out there and see a community rally around it! I’ve toyed with bringing these cards to the market in a variety of ways, but ultimately Kickstarter will give me the most control over the end product.

What is your inspiration behind Bloodlines Playing Cards? How did you come up with the idea?
My inspiration was really rooted in the classical tradition/nature of playing cards with a desire to bring a fresh look to the face cards. Bloodlines derives it's name from the tradition of playing cards - and the 4 royal families. Each "family" has their own traits and personalities - something I hope people find delightful in this set. What you expect to see in a card set - kings, queens, weapons, the reflected design - it’s all there. But if you look closer, they’re not your typical characters, something I hope supporters will appreciate.

Talk to us a bit about going from the first draft to the final version of Bloodlines. How did you get to this finished product?
The cards went through many revisions. Mostly around color, the deck was much duller when I began. I spent nearly every evening for a year working on this deck, so change was bound to happen! The biggest adjustment was adding texture - the cards were originally designed with straight, solid clean lines. The texture brought so much more to the cards though, and I knew I had to update everything! That took awhile.

What was your most brilliant breakthrough when designing the deck?
I really feel like the back design was the hardest element to design - and it took many, many permutations to get it to where it is now. Finding a way to get the line work just right, make something I felt that both hobbyists and card professionals would be proud to use, that was probably the closest feeling to a breakthrough for me! Once the back and the tuck box were complete, everything felt right - cohesive.

With so many playing card projects competing for funding, why should potential backers choose your deck?
I realize there’s many, many other choices out there! I’ve poured a lot of my time, energy and self into this deck, and I hope the artwork reflects that. I’d want backers to choose my deck purely because they like it - because they want to see it exist as much as I do!

Finally, what are your favourite playing card decks?
Hands down, the Animal Kingdom Cards are some of my all time favorites! They’re fun, beautifully illustrated, and for a great cause! I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Tyler Deeb’s “Misc Co.” or Neighborhood Studio’s “Monarchs” - both inspiring, quality designs.

Thank you for your time, Billy and all the best! To support Bloodlines Playing Cards, head to Kickstarter.

Pledge starts from $15 and the deck will be printed by USPCC. Uncut sheet is also as an add-on.

The 12 Most Funded Kickstarter Playing Cards Campaigns Ever

The custom playing cards market has boomed over the past year, investment in crowd-funded decks have surged and new designs and concepts are pushing the boundaries of the simple constraints of one tuck x four suits x thirteen cards.

There’s no doubt that crowdfunding has had an impact on the playing cards industry. For those unfamiliar with crowdfunding, in a nutshell, is the collective effort of individuals who network and pool their money (backers) to support projects initiated by other people or companies. The pool is used as capital for products and/or services offered as rewards to backers- only if the funding goal is achieved. Each project has a variety of different pledge options (reward tiers) where larger pledges are rewarded with increasing incentives.

Kickstarter has been the most popular platform for crowdfunding playing card projects. In this "Top 12", we’ve collated 12 of the most funded playing card projects on Kickstarter to date. Black Mint, The Princess Bride and MISC Goods have dropped outside the Top12. Joining the list are Bitcoin, Parlour and Jerry's Nugget Reprint Playing Cards.
