Revealed: The United States Playing Card Co. presents Civil War by Jackson Robinson

There is no denying that Jackson Robinson and the Kings Wild Project have made an impact on the playing card industry as well as the crowd funding venue Kickstarter. Jackson has taken a concept and turned it into a business. Not one to sit back and wait, Jackson’s constantly writing the next chapter for the Kings Wild Project as well as himself. The Kings Wild Fulfilment Center was the 1st branch out for the company, and just recently Jackson launched his in house crowd funding platform, Kings Wild Funded that will showcase Kings Wild Projects by Jackson as well as up and coming artists designing decks under the Kings Wild Project’s branding.

Another chapter is right around the corner for Jackson. It’s not a secret or surprise that Jackson was approached by the United States Playing Card Company a while back and contracted to produce a deck for the US based printer. After all, they are very familiar with Jacksons work, having produced all of his projects to date.  The first Official USPC Exclusive playing cards designed by Jackson Robinson will be The Civil War Series; this project will mark the first non-kickstarter project for Jackson and is scheduled for release sometime in the near future.

The historically themed Series will consist of 4 decks, 2 Standard Editions and 2 Limited Edition, both featuring the meticulous detail and design standards we’ve grown accustomed to from Jackson. The Civil War Standard Editions will represent the North Union in a Blue deck and the Confederate South in a Red Deck. The Standard Editions will be released across multiple USPC outlets including their Bicycle web site. The Limited Edition decks will feature the same Tuck and Card design as the Standard Decks, but will be presented in an embossed and foiled tuck box and a limited print run of only 1500 decks of each color.

The Limited Edition decks will be available exclusively on the Kings Wild Project web site for purchase in the near future, so keep an eye out.

Kings Wild Launches Subscription Service: Here's What $25 a Month Gets You

Kings Wild has just launched its subscription service, which for $25 per month will give subscribers access to a deck of playing cards each month. For the Kings Wild Shorts subscription service, designer Jackson Robinson will release a small run of 144 decks all exploring vastly different styles and themes. Jackson Robinson told Kardify,

My hope is to push my self and widen the range of styles that I create with my favorite art, playing cards. For me, it is going to allow for a much wider range of styles and themes that will keep the hobby of collecting new and fresh for the collectors. As well as put some of the intrigue and game/hunt into collecting.

The the first deck will be Equinox, which was shipped out to subscribers end of last week. The elegant deck features feature full-color printed tuck on the inside and outside and comes with a separate white numbered seal that will be numbered 000/144.

The tuck case will have a brushed gold foil seal. Inside, the deck is fully custom with face cards familiar enough to play with. Simple yet elegant!

At the moment, the service is offering a single deck a month. Eventually, Kings Wild Shorts does plan to start offering new features to subscribers. According to Jackson,

You will really see this in the new year when I release my collector's card. It was inspired by when I collected baseball cards as a kid. From January, each subscriber will get a Collector's card that will have 12 empty slots and with each months deck, you will get a unique stamp that you fill each slot with. Then at the end of the year, you will turn in the card and you get the card returned with a very special deck you can only get by turning in a full card.

Kickstarter: Emerald Tally-Ho's by Kings Wild Project

The Emerald Tally Ho's are now LIVE on Kickstarter!

At first glance the Emerald Tally Ho's by Kings Wild Project may look like a re-color, but nothing could be further from the truth. The Emerald Edition has a completely new and unique back design with a beautiful green and purple color pallet. The Emerald Edition continues the Jackson Robinson Series which began earlier this year with the Scarlett Tally Ho's. Both decks have a visual connection, as well as a family connection and eloquently go together, but at the same time stand alone as individually unique, much like the people who inspired them.

Revealed: Federal 52 Playing Cards Part 2 Coming In June +Teaser

Federal 52 is the wildly successful Kickstarter project from LA-Based Artist, Jackson Robinson, that features magnificent artwork inspired by US currency and bank notes. Funded within the first 24 hours of going live on Kickstarter.com in March, the Federal 52 project raised a total of $149,156 from 2,798 backers (me included). During the entire project. which was live until April 22 when it was officially awarded the funds, Jackson kept the backer community on our feet with new add-on rewards and bonuses every step of the way. He even released a second Gold Certificate Deck as a special add-on. During the project, Jackson talked about ideas for a Silver Certificate Deck and Reserve Note Deck as add-ons or as a potential new project separate from the original Federal 52. However, it was eventually decided that the decks would be issued in a separate project after the current project.

Well, get ready folks! Jackson clearly did not waste much time dropping teasers of the second Federal 52 Kickstarter project. Today, Jackson released an update that simply said "Coming in June..." with the image that is posted below of the Silver Certificate and Reserve Note backs.

He also updated the community about the face card design for both decks in the comments of this teaser...

The Silver Certificate's face cards will match the Gold Cert and Federal 52 to keep in line with the set. However I'm planning on some cool stuff with the Reserve Note Deck. There are a few Presidents and portraits that I have been saving to switch things up.

After the success of the last project, I think it is safe to say this deck will have no trouble getting backed. I will be covering this project here on Tuck Case and will even post a review once the decks are received from both projects.

First Look: Kings Wild Project to Launch Olive Tally-Ho on Kickstarter Today

Today on Kickstarter, Kings Wild Project will be launching the fifth deck in the hugely popular KWP Luxury Tally Ho Series, the Olive Edition.

The series has always been a personal one for creator Jackson Robinson and the Olive Edition is no different being dedicated to the newest addition to Jackson Robinson's family, baby girl Olive Graham Robinson, expected next month.

The Olive Edition will be available in limited editions just as the previous 4 editions, including the ultra limited Legacy Edition and gilded Edition (pictured above).

Kickstarter: Texas by Kings Wild Projects

Launching tomorrow Saturday August 8th at 12:00PM Central is the latest project by Jackson Robinson and Kings Wild Projects in collaboration with No. 4 St.James.

Like it's namesake Texas is quite bold and beautiful. Once again looking to his personal background Jackson Robinson, who grew up in rural West Texas, brings his celebration of a place he once again calls home.

Texas is following the familiar blueprint of Jackson's recent projects, offering something for everyone at various price points and tiers. Texas will be available in 4 versions, the Players Edition featuring metallic gold inks on the front and back of the cards. The Premium Edition which also features metallic inks, but has an upgraded 100% custom tuck case.

Then we come to the more elite variations starting with the Gold Edition, 750 Gold Gilded decks with a custom intaglio engraved tax stamp belly band featured on the tuck case and of course the now popular Legacy Edition. Jackson Robinson is set to open an additional 144 slots for the popular Kings Wild Shorts subscription service this Friday 15th December. The subscription service offers an original deck of playing cards for $30 a month. This project is an artistic study and creation, in the form of playing cards, that pays homage to the beautiful world of matchbook printing of the late 1800s & early 1900s, especially the wide range of matchbook ephemera produced all over the world.

The deck features beautiful bold designs and colors of vintage matchbox artwork. The color palette and design have been applied to the vintage court cards, giving it a consistent look throughout. News: Artist Jackson Robinson to Launch Sherlock Holmes Playing Card Project in November

In less than a month, Jackson Robinson, the creator behind one of the most successful playing card projects on Kickstarter.com - Federal 52, will launch his next playing card project. Jackson's upcoming project is inspired by one of the World's most famous literary characters to ever grace print - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. Jackson has been granted an official license by the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Estate and will be collaborating with Sherlockian Experts that the Estate has made available to him. The collaboration will aid Jackson in maintaining the characters' integrity as Doyle originally intended when he first inked his characters into existence.

 The majority of the project's details are under lock and key. However, we have been given early information as well as a sneak peak of the project. According to Jackson, he will be pulling inspiration from various actors and actresses who have portrayed Doyle's characters over the years but he will also contribute his own style and spin to the world of Holmes. The project will feature three decks - The Baker Street Edition, The Holmes Edition and The Moriarty Edition (as seen below) and a completely unique court set featured on all three card decks (the same design to go to all three decks). Jackson will also be making a limited edition set available for backers.

Kickstart: Federal 52 Reserve Note Tuck Case, Q&A with Jackson Robinson

Federal 52 Part 2 is approaching quickly. In mid-June Jackson Robinson will open the gates to the highly anticipated second part of the Federal 52 Playing Card Series. I spoke with Jackson this week and was given the images containing the Reserve Note tuck case design.

I was also able to do a quick Q&A with Jackson regarding the overall project. Throughout the project Jackson has been very informative so these answers will be more advice oriented than revealing. However, it shines light on the amount of time and dedication he has put into this. It also gives great advice to those looking to create a deck.

Tuck Case: How long ago did you start designing this project?

Jackson: The idea around February. I had just finished my first Kickstarter project and it was successfully funded.

My brother Taylor (who produced my Kickstarter video) are always shooting back and forth ideas. I had a few deck ideas in mind. I even started a completely different deck when we came up with the idea. I then started doing a ton of research, concept drawings and inkings. The project and designs started taking shape and I felt like I had something special. I called my brother up and said "how about I fly out to Brimingham, AL and we shoot the promo video." I brought all of my pencils and drafting equipment and hopped on a plane. It was a quick weekend but we were able to have a blast and capture the story behind the project.

Tuck Case: Kickstarter can be a tough crowd, when did you know you were ready to go live with Federal 52?

Jackson: I knew that the Federal 52 had the potential to be a big project so I wanted to make sure I was ready and used to the Kickstarter system. So I did another small scale project to get even more projects under my belt. It was also an opportunity for me to build a small backer base to "prime the pump" for the Federal 52.

Tuck Case: What is most challenging about the Federal 52 project?

Jackson: By far the most challenging thing about the project was the shear amount of work that had to be done. I have a full time job as an Art Director and dad, so I would usually put in 4 - 6 hours every night for 7 days a week when I got home from work. My wife is a super mom and we have two little girls so her role was to help give me "undistributed" time working on the cards. It was also an added bonus keeping up with comments and updates throughout the process.

Tuck Case: One thing (out of many) that I like about this project is that you love the art but you also listen to the community and make changes based on that input, was there ever a time during this whole project that you ended up struggling to change something but did anyway for the community?

Jackson: Not really, I've been a professional artist my whole life. So I'm pretty used to clients telling me to change things for no other reason than "I don't like that." I was open to suggestion from the basic reason that I hadn't been around the card designing scene very long. Just like with any functional design there are always simple rules that naturally create them selves through years of refinement and use. Playing card was no different. As soon as I was made aware of the "rules" it was easy to evolve my designs to suite those rules. As long as it stayed within the spirit and style of what I was creating, I was okay with it. I also think as a Kickstarter creator designing the cards as I went gave me an easy opportunity to involve my backers in the process. The natural by product was more engaged and loyal backers that helped spread the word about the project.

Tuck Case: On top of other suggestions and input, the Silver Certificate was an extremely favorable add-on that many people wanted with the first project. How did you decide when to go with a community suggestion and when not to?

Jackson: Well even before the project started I had the idea of the Federal 52 being a series, just because there has been so much evolution in currency over the years that the inspiration was limitless. When the time came for me to decide on saving the Silver Certificate deck for another project it was an easy choice because I knew that in order to stay on track with the Fed 52 and Gold Cert decks, I had to not rock the boat with more designs. I also knew that I had a 4th deck, The Reserve Note, and didn't want it to be the sole deck during another project. In the end, the choice came down to what route was going to give me the best chance to produce the finest and highest level of execution possible.

Tuck Case: As a fan of playing cards, are there any decks either on the market or out of print that are favorites? And why?

Jackson: My favorite deck is the Red Aristocrats. Scarlet is my favorite color so that's where the red plays a factor, and the back design is very similar to currency art. It is a design that has stood the test of time and will continue to do so. I love the fact that there is no novelty in the design and that it stands alone on the mere principle that it is a stellar back design.

Tuck Case: Other than your love of currency design and playing cards, what or who inspired you to do this deck?

Jackson: What inspired me the most was the opportunity to create my own idea and the chance that, that creation could be what I do for a living.

Tuck Case: Do you have any advice for anyone that is looking to do a custom playing card project?

Jackson: I would say this to anyone who is thinking about doing a custom deck: There are so many decks coming out that you have to have a stellar idea or concept to act as the bedrock for your deck. If you don't have this, your deck will just be another Kickstarter deck that comes and goes. I don't want my decks to be just Kickstarter decks, I want my decks to be a huge player in the card collecting world. Because of that I will have to execute my decks at a level equal to or greater than that of the Theory 11's, Ellusionist's, and D&D's. I eventually want to be able to produce a deck because I have a following and a reputation of creating the best decks, and not have to use Kickstarter. I think if you are thinking about being a designer of a deck, you need to set the highest standards for yourself and keep iterating on your ideas until you have something that is fresh and new and executed at the highest level.

Also, learn everything you can about the deck production process and what it takes to produce a deck. I have almost 12 years of printing experience that I was able to pull from designing Star Wars toy packages for Hasbro toys, so I had a leg up on the printing process. I have heard so many horror stories of deck creators that get flush with cash after a funded project and don't realize that they were supposed to use templates from USPCC to design their cards in.

Kickstarter: Jackson Robinson Launches Federal 52 Part II

Jackson Robinson, creator of the Federal 52 playing card project, launched part II of the Federal 52 Playing Card Series today (12pm pacific time) on Kickstarter after a month of teasers. At launch the funding instantly took off and successfully reached goal after being live for less than 20 minutes (18min 42sec to be exact).  Federal 52 Part II includes the Silver Certificate deck (Bicycle Branded and Unbranded) and the Reserve Note deck (Bicycle branded and Unbranded) that was first introduced during part I of the project but never released. The project also includes the Limited Edition Reserve Note deck which was unveiled shortly after plans for Part II were released. There are various add-ons available that include t-shirts, uncut sheets, posters and an interesting add-on that allows you to buy custom serial numbers and plate IDs to appear on a number of decks.

Project Background: Federal 52 Playing Card Project Part I finished funding on April 22, 2013. The project, which features bank note playing card designs, included the original Federal 52 (Bicycle branded and Unbranded) along with an additional Gold Certificate deck. The decks from Project I are supposed to appear in September 2013 to backers. Quickly after the funding of Part I, Tuck Case posted a story about how Jackson revealed plans for Part II of the project to be launched on Kickstarter in mid-June.

The Goal: With any Kickstarter project, in order for the creator to receive funding for the project the goal must be met. In this case, the goal was set at $16,000, which is just about double the goal of the original project. However, backers blew through the goal and funds are only growing.



For what this project is offering and what is known about USPCC deck production, Jackson could be asking for a lot more. Fortunately, it is being offered at a great goal level that could be reachable 10x to 20x over. At this rate, these rewards may go quick so act sooner rather than later if you plan to back.

The Timeline: The project will last a total of 40 days and will cease taking backer funds on July 25, 2013. The deck is scheduled to be in your hands in December 2013.

The Decks: At the start of the project, the unlimited playing card decks will be printed on standard Bicycle stock. The Limited Edition Reserve Note will be printed on Casino Bee Stock and will be limited to 1000 decks.

News: Jackson Robinson Inks Creative Contract with the United States Playing Card Company

Jackson Robinson, of the widely successful Federal 52 playing card project, and The United States Playing Card Company (USPCC) have inked a creative contract/agreement that will give Jackson the opportunity to design exclusive playing card decks with the USPCC and it's Bicycle brand of playing cards. Jackson made the announcement on Facebook and on his Federal 52 Part II Kickstarter project late in the evening on Tuesday night - October 15, 2013. The key points in the announcement from Jackson reads:

 I have officially signed a creative contract with  The United States Playing Card Company.

I get the incredible opportunity to design future decks for USPC(C) and it's subsidiary, Bicycle. 

The decks that I design for Bicycle will be exclusive to them, while I get to independently continue to create the Highest Quality Luxury decks under the Kings Wild Project name.

All of the Federal 52 decks have no part of this agreement, this is only for future projects.

News: New Sherlock Holmes Deck by Jackson Robinson [Updated]

After two successful playing card (Federal 52) projects on Kickstarter, Jackson Robinson has announced that he has been in talks with the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Estate and was granted an approval to make an officially licensed Sherlock Holmes Playing Card Deck.

According to Jackson, he's always been captivated by the characters and stories of Sir Conan Doyle and will contribute his own unique style and spin to the Holmes universe.

The project will feature three decks – The Baker Street Edition, The Holmes Edition and The Moriarty Edition and a completely unique court set featured on all three card decks. Jackson will also be making a limited edition set available for backers.
